Scanner Scoop - Sat, August 23, 2008

By nighthawk • Aug 23rd, 2008 • Category: Scanner Scoop

I’m opening this up in hopes that people will help us to fill in for Kat.

PRECIOUS has been doing a good job at this, but very busy as I understand.

Last night a report from the Cranston Area of 3 automobiles racing, possibly headed towards Morehead. Just prior to that call, KSP requested the City to investigate a complaint of a fight at one of the local bars (i think it was the plaza), and unless I misunderstood this turned out to become a much larger investigation then a fight. I heard the City and KSP going to a couple of places up DryCreek Rd and a third location in the city limits.

I’m having trouble keeping up with everything that has been going on, but plenty to write about if I had the chance to note it all down.

So I’m going to leave this open for people who want to help out, and I’ll add a few things here and there as I hear them too.

Hopefully Kat will get to feeling better soon and things will be back to normal, but until then please help us help her out with the scanner scoop.

  1. PRECIOUS Says:

    Scanner Scoop
    August 23,2008
7:30 a.m. Ems is responding to Jason way to a 76 year old male
complaining of chest pain and lame breathing

7:34 a.m. Ems is responding to Broody Place apartments to a 21 year old
female who has had a c-section a week or 2 weeks ago and is having acessive
    bleeding

  2. nighthawk Says:

Around 3:40pm a 1 motorcycle accident was reported near the intersection of
Hwy 801 and 1274 about 1 mile out on 1274 in a 90 degree curve.
Member from Rowan Rescue was first official on the scene and reported that
the patient was going in and out of consciousness.
Ems Requested Med Chopper and MFD set up a landing zone at the intersection
    of Hwy 801 and 519.
4:05 Ambulance is transporting patient to landing zone and chopper is landing.
KSP is on the accident scene and will probably be investigating the accident
for a while in that blind curve. So use caution if you have to travel in that area.
If I’m understanding communications correctly, this is in a blind curve and travelers
may have to stop suddenly or unexpectedly. Might also be some long waiting in traffic.

  3. nighthawk Says:

    ARMED ROBBERY AT 801 BP
Multiple units are on the scene of what has been reported as a possible Armed Robbery
    at the 801 BP.
The report was phoned in by a pedestrian in the area from my understanding.
Only description given was a male with a white tobaggon and Carhart jacket.
This was reported at approx 10:40pm and dispatched to S5 who was somewhere way up Holly-Fork Road (and they claim we don’t need more deputies) who advised he have a 20 minute ETA.
City police at first decided to stay at the interstate and 60 west inside the city or whatever they define the words "our area" as…
At about 10:48 I heard who sounded like a city officer leaving his home and headed towards the scene on KY-801. He inquired if anyone was on the scene yet and dispatch advised that they didn’t know.
At 10:51 the (one who sounded like a) city officer went onto the scene and advised that 3 Troopers were already on the scene and that he was 10-97 (out with them I suppose).
At 10:53pm S5 went on the scene just less then a minute after the (one who sounded like a) city officer advised that multiple units were on the scene already.
At 10:59pm a description of a vehicle that might possibly have been maybe been used in the robbery was finally given to to all officers on the city/county frequency.

Awaiting more information at this time…

  4. nighthawk Says:

Still awaiting more information… but I have to wonder why an ambulance wasn’t dispatched
to the station so at-least someone from the medical field could speak with the victims of the
robbery, just in case they were to go into shock or something, even if there isn’t any physical
injuries, that isn’t a sign that a victim of an armed robbery hasn’t been emotionally injured in
some form or another, and it isn’t a sign that they wont enter into a delayed state of shock.
So we will wait and see if any additional information makes it to the free press or if its saved
    for the commercial presses.
It is notable that the (one who sounded like) city officer who was on the scene is now
now responding to calls in the city.
Sort of hard to tell if the officer on the scene was identifying with a 1 or an S or an F,
but if the S numbers stop at 8 as indicated by the sheriff during the last debate/forum,
then the officer had to be a either city officer or a forestry officer.

Maybe they are using cell phones to continue the investigation.

  5. nighthawk Says:

Still no further information as of 12:03pm was confirmed over the city/county radio.
(Post 8 is advising MPD that no further info available at this time according to radio traffic)
Now there is some sort of BIG DEAL about writing a noise ordinance ticket.
Seems like the president of a BIG CORPORATION type of fellow might want to pitch
a little fit over it or something? He called and a shift supervisor will be speaking with him.
The crew was warned several times before the ticket was written.
Officer would tell them to shut a machine down and they would, but would turn it right back on.
Maybe he should just go back and arrest the whole bunch of them if a ticket doesn’t do the job.

Or then again they might have called the President of the Big Corpo to advise him of the situation of the work crew not observing the noise ordinance …Who Knows? only The Shadow knows.

  6. nighthawk Says:

Some units are now clearing the scene of the Robbery at 801 BP.
Still no additional information has been given.
But I can confirm that either S or F was used as a prefix to the radio number of the one officer
who I had mistaken as a city officer earlier.
S5 just cleared the scene of the robbery also.
    No disposition from him either.

Time for me to grab about four winks of shuteye.

  7. [(Required Voluntary Compliance)] Says:

ya know if they would give me a crew of 7 guys; 2dump trucks 2 backhoes
a roller and big dozer we could have a "Cars only exit" at big perry ready
for road base and blacktop in about 4 weeks that would make the guy "up
Holly Fork" ETA to Exit 133 more like 10 to 15min. (I do not recommend
non-straightline speeds of over 95mph on I-64 don’t care what the emergency is)
On open straitaways where you can see over 1mile hit 110 if it is justifiable but
those speeds start to get dangerous as the tires can slide in a much of a turn.
A lot of tires are only rated to S90 or v-rate V110 and brakes are going
to glow and catch fire unless you coast to slow down alot you will be replacing
those pads and discs and fluid.

  8. [(Required Voluntary Compliance)] Says:

Can we get a channel numbering system in place so
that we know what frequencies we are talking about locally

I am thinking of reprogramming my scanner again
and some others may want to co-ordinate what channels
to plug in on certain numbers in order of priority or
    traffic.

    like:

    channel
    1 MHD city pd freq : ———
    2 MHD Fire channel 1 —-
    3 Rowan Sherriff channel 1—-
    4 Ambulance ch 1 freq—-
    5 Air Ambulance ch1
6 Mhd Police chan. 2 freq—–
    7 Fire channel 2
    8 Sherriff chan, 2 frequency —.—
    9 Rescue Squad ch 1
    10 VFD channel 1

(On many scanners I have played with you have
banks of 10 channels you can turn off and on
so you could have a grouping of 10 channels per county
IF you have a big outside antenna than can pull in freqs
from say 50 air miles you can lock out the other
    counties when one gets busy
there likely scanner forums on this on the web I
    haven’t look yet but a
custom thought out list of local / region freq.s
and pages could be a good thread to start.

  9. Clearfield Cat Says:

Stupid questions- where can you buy a scanner, are they really expensive and are they hard to work? I have enough trouble just doing the little picky things I do on my computer! :)

  10. Kat Says:

Scanner aren’t all that expensive Clearfield Cat, depending on whether you want a base or mobile. Mine was about $110.00 over 12 years ago and it’s still working fine. Once programmed, there is nothing hard to operate, turn it on, turn it off, adjust the volume. I admittedly have no idea how to program it. John Northcutt programmed mine about 10 years ago. Go for a Uniden BearCat brand. Anyone else have any useful info for Clearfield Cat? I may have to bring mine up to you RVC and have you program it. It certainly would make sense for us all to be on the same channel, so to speak.

  11. Kat Says:

PS,still haven’t turned mine back on yet. Just can’t deal with it and some other things right now. Hopefully sometime soon, I’d get the desire back to do it but personally right now I could care less about what’s going on on the scanner and you know that I normally live with it on 24/7. I just need some extra peace and quiet and prayers right now as I’m going through a tough personal situation. Hubby dearest is in his home country of Costa Rica visiting family right now and my grandmother has been put on hospice, amongst other personal health problems, etc. Hopefully when the temp’s start getting into the 50’s, and dropping, I’ll get better. Most on here know I’m allergic to the sun and intolerant to heat and don’t do well in the summer. I appreciate those helping with the scanner news. This is the first time I’ve even logged onto Rowan Review in a couple weeks. Wishing everyone well.

  12. required voluntary compliance Says:

Sometimes it seems, just seems, to be a syncronicity to things, you know
    "when it rains it pours"
    or
several people all get some personal maldies in their
life at similar times, it almost, just barely make you
think about lending a sliver of credibility to
the astro-log-ers or psy-chicks but then
I remember Dion Warwic and how they could
not even forsee their own banquerupsey LOL?

  13. required voluntary compliance Says:

Not that this pertains to this post but it would be nice to have a
"anon" common mail box that someone to post a
suggestion or complaint and it would not be seen by everyone and
it would be distributed to all the authors and administrators for action
or just a notice of information or tips.
    FOR INSTANCE
this is fairly common knowledge: on scanners only members of
the press are allowed by policy or statuet to have portable scanners in
their personal transportation or perhaps on their person of of their own
property. This is to prevent theives from monitoring the whereabouts of the
authorities so they can co-ordinate where to break in and steel, a fairly
older policy but still. There are ways to get "press" IDs for those
that say an admistrator of Rowan Review could issue so that
if someone was REALLY interested in a event that was ongoing
they could go nearer to the seen of a drawn out fire or domestic
or whaatever where the onsite lower power 2nd channels are in
use for more details. It really is probably and hopefully a really
rare occasion for something like that to be of any real use but
the other factor is you can get a cig. plug adaptor for most scanners
base or portable as they likely are 12volt DC and take them along
camping or on trips or to the grocery and back IF you want to
    have that option during a event and you still have to go somewhere;

NOW if I could have put this in a "blind suggestion box" "for members only"
some hint or FYI would not have "went public" and maybe to
any competition or folks that should not have such information.

I realise this is a bit of a crude example and
some will cry it suggests information hording or censorship but
some information should be kept between friends or
theives, but there really is no code amoung theives or pirates
    aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrg.
(By the way I noticed Postman Pat’s cartoon british hat emblem
is really a guilded impressionistic skull and crossbones, makes
me want to go to google image and look around for some other
    british death cult esoteric symbology???)
    submitted for you approval
there is a signpost up ahead
    you
    have
    just
    crossed over
    into the

    TechKnomen Zone….

  14. required voluntary compliance Says:

"on their person of of their own
property" computers ar NOT perfect some noise or
compression error altered that! Like I need anymore typos
that was typed and sent as "off" not "of of"

  15. nighthawk Says:

10 channels will get you the very basics here in Rowan before going into exploration of
the talk-around, tact, mutual aid, calling, etc… This is before you consider KSP digital
or some of the local trunking (that isn’t listed btw…), or the need for a VFO (slider) for
a few radios that are just a little off freq accidentally on purpose?
Then you have narrow band ssb AM over uhf/vhf FM freq. Most scanners are designed
to receive FM only and can’t distinguish the need to switch over to AM even if it has the
capability of switching. I have seen a few modded with a toggle switch so it can be manually
    switched into AM receive mode.
What Kat has suggested might be the best choice unless you want to learn a whole lot.
Might be fun to post the judicial frequencies here?

  16. PRECIOUS Says:

First thing hope Kat gets to feeling better and back to her self soon
I try my best to help out and yes nighthawk I have been very
busy and feeling bad myself to but I help out as much as I can
but nighthawk you do a good job helping out to but I know you
aren’t feeling well either hope you feel better soon !
