Bike people vs horse people?

By dave • Jun 16th, 2008 • Category: Banner

I was given a story, to which I cannot find the link right now, about an incident that apparently happened somewhere around the Cave Run area, on Caney trail.

Apparently, a couple of horse riders were attacked by someone screaming obscenities about having horses on trails and then threw rocks at them and chased them with sticks.

The story indicated that a person of interest had been identified, but no names were given.

I just recently returned from the area around Boulder, Colorado, where there is a HUGE bicycle culture.  People ride them EVERYWHERE.  I know that you do see more and more people on bikes around this area now, especially near Cave Run and down in the Red River Gorge.

But, with stories like this, do you think we are headed for trouble between the horse people and the bike people, or can they peacefully coexist?

Just wondered what you all thought, or if you’d heard anything about the incident.

This guy got out of hand & over reacted it looks like but there are two sides.
Horses on bike trails can be a real problem, I got the worst hair folicle infection
I ever had from a ride I did about 15years ago and I came upon a section that was shared by horses and it was a bit wet. I thought I would lose my leg as the hole just kept getting bigger and bigger from that little hair, The scar is now almost the size of a dime. I was on antibiotic for
over 10 days and the hole just kept getting bigger. I was about 28 at the time
and thank G-D you could still by sulfur at the drug store as that stopped the infection I keep some hidden around now because of that. Horse trails should be kept completel seperate in my book for the health of everyone. They do carry some parasites that can be passed on to humans (threadworms comes to mind but so can dogs) the bikes spray the horse hockey goo
all over when you ride even at slow speed and stir up the dust or mud.

If a spot is wet at all or when it dries it make bike riding really rough.

I am glad they took the dirt bikes off the trails as those skeleton suit guys
were rud and churnd up the trails into goo that even a horse could get stuck in.

  2. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

Many hikers might want both banned but bikes do just enough erosion to keep the trails open
and the dry hoof holes can even be hard to walk on.

  3. Harry Ryan Says:

What they fail to tell is the whole truth and that bike riders were told after an incident where
several horseback riders tried to push an older man (73) off the trial with their horses during
a mtn. bike race, that they (horseback riders) carry guns and things could get dangerous.

After several incidents on the road, I decided to try open carry on my left hip, reverse draw style, on my commute a few years ago,(* since bike cops were being seen more).
& WOW, nobody turned in front of me after passing, they got over when passing, no
horn blasts, no ‘baccer’ spit thrown at me, and such. "A armed society is a polite society"
I guess. With a zippered ziplock baggie, you can keep the dust and spray out of your
sidearm on the MTB trail, and it will catch your brass if you have to discharge it.
IF you use a target 22 with subsonic ammo, a Mt. Eagle mostly plastic model,
is light weight and quiet, IF you have to shoot someone and you catch your brass they would have to catch you to prove it. "Why that bullet could have flown over a mile"
Carry a extra clip & use a popular tire tread for some additional reasonable doubt eh?
In colder weather you could use a neoprene mask to look even more intimidating, like "Jason"
I bet that would get some respect or at least fear.

  5. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

Ya know some moutain bikers I have been get a little paranoid after
a toke on a left handed cigarette, I would not be messing with them?
yuk yuk yuk, some are just ccccccccrrrrrrraaaazyyy yeoowwww weeee.
take yur chances I guess. (reverse intimidation tactics are fair right?)

  6. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

uh, that was "I have been [around] get a little paranoid" I might have not typed in that word OR
big brudder may have had a little giggle on that one, hee hee?

  7. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

hey theres a $12,000 grant bridge almost done that connects the
walk/bike path to the city park along the flood levy by the fast lube place. The plan I think is to some how connect by cornerstone to southwest morehead to the old railroad bridge and Mcbrayer Road then to the Rail road bed all the way to Lexington where feasable.
Back when I was in shape I could go 50miles in 2.5 hours on us60
on a good grade resurfaced Rail bed in shape folks could go a long way on a bike. Salt lick to Morehead in say 35min. or
Mt. Stering to Salt Lick in say 45 min. with a tail wind. LOL?

  8. nighthawk Says:

I don’t know for sure, but that was supposed to be a part of the rails trails plan I think… Olivehill via Haldeman.

  9. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

http://www.DBRT.org i think is the webpage

On National Trail Day(1st weekend in june?), there is a annual club ride along the proposed Lexington-Big Sandy Rail Trail corridor.
I did the section from Salt Lick to Olive Hill last year, at 80+lbs overweight at the time the younger set only beat me by 15min.
for the 30+mile jaunt with a pit stop in Morehead of 20min.

    Its part of the rails to trails national effort;
With gas prices going up artificially or not
we might be forced to use these trails to
avoid being run over by the armored personell carriers
    of the Neu werld oder.

Walter Blevins (whatever you think of him) tried to propose this back when the rails were first pulled out in the early to mid 1980s and just about got ran out of town by the protestors. Some folks are just too far ahead of their time (right or wrong)
I have heard some nay sayers that claim rail trails could lead to
communistic stuff like dictating what color you can paint your house if it can be seen from the scenic path but I doubt such extremes will or have been implemented, It is just a safer path to jog walk and bike on, as long as the rednecks don’t get on it and spin out thier 4whlrs and bust ale8bottles and such.

  10. nighthawk Says:

It’s starting to look like the new sections of Highway 519 will be open before our new walking/biking bridge is opened. Maybe they will finish it before it gets so old that somebody comes along and declares it unsafe for people to walk across?

  11. nighthawk Says:

I have to sort of agree that the bike and horse trails should be separate trails… Even though it would be imposed by some sort of government regulation/restriction.
BUT; as said above, the danger of contracting a serious infection from the horse dung flying/being flung from the bicycle wheel is a serious issue. It can cause very complicated infections.

I mean, Yes it’s going to be unfair to cyclists as well as horsemen as they wouldn’t be able to
ride certain trails, but I can’t think of any better alternatives right now… and I’ve been looking for alternatives too.

  12. nighthawk Says:

    That DBRT.org site is never up when I click the link looking for more information;
    BUT:
There is a photorial somewhere on one of the railtrails sites that shows pictures from
along the proposed route. I’ll link it when I find it again.

  13. nighthawk Says:

I’m starting that the pictorial on the railtrail may have been on DBRT.org, as I can’t find it now
and the DBRT site is still down.
I’m still looking for the pages in my spare time though.

  14. Scott Says:

    Will this help?

    http://www.kyrailtrail.org/projects/big-sandy.php

  15. nighthawk Says:

    Thanks Scott!
That is exactly the site I was looking for.
After browsing around there for a while, I finally found those pictures from along the route.
Here is that link to those pictures: http://www.kyrailtrail.org/gallery/LBS-Carter

    Thank You again Scott.

  16. FYI Says:

FYI that DBRT was the site for a while
I thought I saw the address on the banner on that foot bridge

(FYI RVC has used FYI in the past too as this is yet
another browser on another computer that I forgot about
    so FYI.

I shall change the browser memory to Required Voluntary Compliance
like most of the others (I hope) are so
when I am not logged in as TechKnomen my browsers will
use the R.V.C. moniker. At one time I thought it would be handy to
know where I was and what computer I was on when I had
posted something and it was a code for me by example
RVC in caps I was at work rvc lower case at home,
EnforcedVC I was at relatives house.
    TechKnomen = logged on;

  17. pseudonomen Says:

DBRT is what’s listed on the sign hanging on the bridge. Don’t know why the site is down since it’s reserved for a number of years. Maybe it’s a student run site and the students running it are on break or something?

  18. Requried Voluntary Compliance Says:

tried to post a map link but it won’t post?
    glitch again or moderated?

  19. nighthawk Says:

Wonder what the deal is with the NO TRESPASSING signs on each end of the foot/bike bridge?
Is it only there to look at or something? Never intended to be used, or what?

Build a bridge (or truck one in and set it up) and then fail to provide adequate access to it?
Then go as far as putting up signs that say NO TRESPASSING?

Was this the city’s idea, or a prank, or what???

    Could it be a way of saying;
We have this cool looking bridge for you to look at but KEEP OFF!
    OR a way of saying;
We as members of city government had this bridge given to us, but are too cheap and lazy to provide decent access to it, and due to our negligence, we have to avoid a lawsuit by ignoring the problem and not allowing the people to use it.

Have I missed a PR-PR (public relations press release) or something?

Doesn’t those NO TRESPASSING signs look sort of rude and snooty of our city officials?

Perhaps the city administration thinks us too stupid to figure out why the orange fence is there?

Maybe they are on a power trip and want to publicly display there desire to dictate rules?

Could be I’m overreacting, but who cares? A sign reading DANGER might be more appropriate.

  20. nighthawk Says:

Could it be that they have a surveillance camera set up waiting for me to snap pictures of the signs and put them up here?

Just like the Pictures Of Rodburn Park?

I have half a mind of driving right up there and photographing those signs before they have a chance to take them down in the morning.

Don’t we deserve some explanations for some of the things they do?

Seeing as the bridge is incomplete as far as ramps on both sides, I can understand the
concern for safety, but NO TRESPASSING signs? Isn’t that going a little overboard?

    It amounts to saying;
This is public property BUT you can’t be here! And we’ll have you arrested if you are.
    Or;
This belongs to you,,, BUT YOU CAN’T USE IT! BECAUSE WE SAID SO! Nah, na, na, na-nah!

  21. nighthawk Says:

Maybe, since they won’t provide for us bicyclists, a safe environment to ride upon, we should
start riding open carry again and file harassment charges when we get stopped for doing something that is completely legal.

  22. nighthawk Says:

If I don’t cut it out, that poor (rich) little fella is going to have an shoot me or something…
    LOLOLOL! ROTFLMAO!
That’s the way to do it man!
Just come knocking on my door asking "What on earth have I ever done to you?"
and when I start naming all the things on the list, just ignore me and leave.

I took my spectacles off because it was raining guy–no need to jump in the car and leave.

I’m not on an artificial power trip, most of the officials know (or at least think they know) who I am.

  23. nighthawk Says:

Sorry about getting off track (pardon the unintentional pun) in this article Dave, but one thing just sort of lead into another.
I looked for a link to the original story that you describe, and wish that I could have found one.
That is quite an interesting occurrence from the sounds of things.

I know both Bike People and Horse People, and the ones who I know manage to coexist peacefully. But as a member has already pointed out above, the trails might should be separate… even though It would be unfair to both… Chances of a bad infection are probable results from riding bikes on horse trails.
He is lucky that he had sulfur and knew how to use it, as that infection could have resulted in amputation.

  24. nighthawk Says:

    Dave,
Could you give us just a little more on this story in the form of a comment or something?

I know about concerns with copyright issues and all, but I wouldn’t think a brief little follow up
posted as a comment would hurt anything.

If your like 90% of the people, you likely don’t file your newspapers away for future reference,
so you’d basically be typing from memory anyways.

  25. nighthawk Says:

"tried to post a map link but it won’t post?
    glitch again or moderated?
    "

Send me the link and I’ll try and edit it in.
Mouseover my nick for my email RVC, just remove the http : //

  26. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

It was a link to a zoom-able map of the DB-R.T. that was found linked
to the photo gallery no big deal I haven’t found it again
It is similiar but more useable than the one on the top
of that webpage linked by SCOTT

  27. nighthawk Says:

I would like to thank Vanessa at The Morehead News for looking into the trail bridge situation.
It appears that I might have taken intent of the city officials all wrong in this case.

See Friday’s paper, Pages 1 and 3 for more insight on the story.

It is still unclear to me exactly who declared the footbridge unsafe,
or why the footbridge cant be moved over on to city property.

  28. [(Required Voluntary Compliance)] Says:

SO one end of the foot bridge is not on city property???
Ooops on that one I guess? I went down through the
articles and missed this thread how do I or anyone else
find it from the front page?? Since THIS IS A LOCAL
ISSUE ATTEMPTING TO HELP PEOPLE? And it was
removed from the forum, or is now not as easy to find
    as the Digital TV threads?

  29. [(Required Voluntary Compliance)] Says:

I FIGGERED it out! Banner(s) is a separate category!
Previous banners have to be found by clicking the banner link
on the current banner story just under the headline. OK?
    derrrr.

  30. nighthawk Says:

I have seen different people (reporters?) filming on the site of the footbridge over the few days. Don’t know what is up with that. Maybe an expose’?
The only thing I know to do is to bookmark this page and keep bumping the topic up in the comments as/when we have new information to publish.

  31. [pseudonomen] Says:

Or maybe Dave could expand the banner so that “Bike People vs Horse People” will show on the front for a while longer.

  32. nighthawk Says:

Hey, If they think that bridge is unsafe or something, maybe we can just walk or ride across the pipe.

  33. Clearfield Cat Says:

Good idea, Nighthawk. To my un-educated eyeballs, the bridge looks perfectly safe, but as I said, what do I know?

  34. [(Required Voluntary Compliance)] Says:

I suspect it is a grey area compliance thing, the slope of the bridge may be too steep OR
it is suspect enought that it is a cover for property dispute.
Someone posted a suggestion that one end is not on city property?
Where did this info come from, the paper?

  35. [(Required Voluntary Compliance)] Says:

obviously by 9/3 I could not find a friday paper referenced above so
    what did this article say?

The bridge since apparently is considered improperly installed and or
not on the correct side of some property boundry may be
a snafu by the DBRT local group that installed it with
intermodial grant money? No trespassing may be referring to
the bridge still being DBRT property and/or the property of the
non public owner? Kentucky statuet may allow a property owner
to put a lein on such a structure if no proper lease was secured?
The bridge and those who built it trespassed in doing so unintentionally?
However, that path could lead to more foot traffic for the businesses
that it passes. This is shown from other areas of the country that
have looked at these multi-use bike hike and run trails, they improve
property values, increase tourism and traffic around the trail,
as a road and MTB cyclist ,and mechanic, for over
30years-road(22+MTB) I have read and seen all sorts of
article on rails to trails and I have NEVER seen one that said it
was a detriment to a community, what possible thing could be
wrong with having a fitness trail for our OBESE society to use?

There are other rail/road corridors that could be opened up like
I have mentioned before, the ole rail bed to almost Elliotville would be
GREAT! It could connect to the City park and this rail trail proposed
Msu would/could donate some small corridor along the north side of the
creek next to their parking lots to connect it in behind the warehouses and over
the neat bridge to follow the road thru the field to accross form the
“blue zoo” and onto this old rail bed. A couple of small bridges
would be needed and some dogs tied up along the way.
(This also connects to some old 4wheeler trails up a powerline to
    Triangle Mountain by the way)

The Paragon/Craney to Leasure trail or biway (I have talked to Blevins bout it and
a magistrate) would also be GREAT, (it is really pretty, up in there on a
MTB) and old jeep trails/old county roads are also connectable to ride
loops up lower craney or around to 711 and back, (gotta be tough on the
uphill there down hill is more fun)

    AAAAAAAAAhhhhhh forget adventure toursism
what is on channel 458 on the saytellight?

  36. nighthawk Says:

According to the newspaper the bridge was built upon STATE Right Of Way.
It had something to do with the lack of an encroachment permit to build on the state right of way.
