Site issues…

By dave • May 12th, 2008 • Category: Banner

Hey folks…don’t panic about the new layout.  I’m not trying to screw everyone up again.  The update last night caused a problem with the theme we were using.  I’ll see what I can do to get it back and working again, but there was a problem with displaying the comments.

Stay tuned…

    But Dave!
This layout has screwed up the old layout.
It is hard to find the articles now, and most of the articles (which now run consecutively) on the front page are locked.

I do have to complement you on the new color scheme…
but the category blocks are all gone. :(

Don’t take me wrong here… The new theme looks great!
But we do need our “unique” category blocks back, and maybe an addition of a few more categories.

OK, I admit it… The WordPress has grown on me, and the old theme was as close to perfection, but perhaps this is merely because I was an author.

On the other hand though, this resembles the old site.
Would you consider making everyone an author by default, and have a few of us log in and approve new articles like back in the old days?
Things do get kind of dull when only a handful of us are writing all of the articles, I think.

If THIS theme were to be set up to make everyone an Author by default, and a few existing authors were given permissions to Approve Posts, then this theme would be perfect “As-Is”, and would do a pretty good job of doubling for the old Plone based site.
AND We wouldn’t need those Category Blocks in the layout. It would be more like the good old days, and we might gain most of our user base back.

    What do you think Dave?

What do you, the readers, think?

I personally think that the success of the old Plone based site was the ability for everyone to be an author.

I know that bringing Plone back is probably out of the question for the time being, and that it’s likely due to hosting restrictions… but at the same time, this is as close as I’ve seen the site look like it used to.

Really, I think that all of us wants a site where more then just a handful of people have the ability to write articles, and for the most part are talking back and forth amongst one another.

We had a good thing once upon a time, Can we bring it back?

I agree with nighthawk. I really don’t like this layout at all. It is so hard to find articles and so bland. I would like the old one back.

I don’t like this set up either. It’s too wide open, if that makes any sense! :)

hey guys…i value the feedback, whether it is fer the new layout, or agin it. :)

anyway…this “theme” had to be “turned on” because the last one did not behave will with the software upgrade i made to Wordpress. It caused the comments section to screw up, for some reason, so i had to figure out something to get us back in business at least.

i can make it so that folks are authors by default, but i’m not sure that is where the problem is coming from. even on the old site (the Plone version) most people were just wanting to comment, and they had to subscribe and become members of the site just to do that…so i figured this set up would at least encourage more commenting, but that’s not happening, either.

let me sort of study on the issues you guys have brought up, and i’ll see what i can do. i’ll deal with each of the issues in a separate response …

If I missed something, this layout looks fine, I like less busy. that loooooong
center column of the layout over the last year was not good.
This most recent fix is fine. the recent comments should go
to the left would be the only change and maybe make the page less
wide for those on a 640×480 or lower res smaller monitors.
