OK..can someone explain this to me?

By dave • Sep 27th, 2007 • Category: Banner

I’m not from and don’t live in Morehead, but I’ve sort of been watching this whole Freight Station thing unfold.  I find it to be a very interesting situation, so I wanted to get a little more information.

Here’s what I know:

The City (or I guess the City Tourism Commission) wants more parking for the Convention/Reptile  Show Center, and so they made an offer to the owners of the Freight Station liquor store to buy them out for $95, 000.  The owners didn’t feel like that offer was good enough, so they said thanks, but no thanks.  The City didn’t like that reply, and they are now threatening to use the power of eminent domain to take the store from the owners.

However, just around the corner, the City/Tourism folks feel it is more than OK to over $735,000 for an empty 1 acre lot to the owner of that lot….an empty lot…no building…nothing.

Now, I’m hoping you can see the reason for my confusion.  I’m guessing the Freight Station sits on what…about a 1/3 acre lot?  It would seem to me then that it is worth at LEAST 1/3 of what an acre lot is…PLUS whatever the value of the building is, which in its current state, probably isn’t much.

So…is that a pretty good summary of the situation?  If so, can someone explain to me the politics/reasoning behind this?  I’m not trying to be facetious…I’d really like to know the thought process on this one.

  1. pseudonomen Says:

I’m still not sure that the commercial buildings up on Main Street wasn’t bought up for demolition when they made the deal with our former mayor, but I , having lived in the Morehead area all of my life, would speculate that those buildings wasn’t a part of that deal. I have seen too much work taking place within those buildings over the last several months to believe that the city purchased them too.
Either way, I have to ask why the city just don’t purchase an adjoining acre from USBank or condemn it’s land for additional parking and leave a Historic Landmark (registered or not) alone?
Better yet, Closer parking and more spaces could be obtained by condemning the Morehead Utility Plant Board building and parking lot, Right?
The Public Library is planning to move up north (with the rest of the new city) and this would leave even more buyout options for parking spaces. So why not demolish the buildings between the conference center and the library and put parking spaces there for now, and buy the library property to expand parking in the future?
That Folk Art Center has an access road (now closed but there) to the bypass right in front of it. Why not buy up (or condemn) that Folk Art Center along with the Utility Plant Board property and build a nice parking lot with access from the bypass?
Of course I don’t understand why the Rodburn Hollow campsites remain closed after dark either.
Day camping anyone? That’s efficient promotion of tourism.

  2. Figment of your Imagenation Says:

Well with the city moving North and all, I don’t understand why build a conference center in the historic district in the first place. That is unless it was intended for use by the University. Why not rename Railroad St (ah, forgot they already did) Um, I uh mean First Street to WEST UNIVERSITY BOULEVARD?
How much is the city checkbook donating towards the new University Golf Course? or more importantly, Why is the city contributing anything towards the University’s purchase of that other Golf Course?
Are the citizens of Morehead going to get free passes and golf lessons?
I’d imagine that the only free golf lesson will be how the city will help the University pay for the new Golf Course with tax revenues.

  3. pseudonomen Says:

So only four people on this whole site are concerned with the city wanting to demolish a historic landmark? Or are others simply afraid to voice their opinions?

Now I simply don’t agree with the nature of the business of selling alcohol, but even though I don’t agree with that business, I feel as though the business owners should be treated fairly.

I also feel as though this Historic Landmark should be spared from demolition. Further, I feel as though the building should remain in it’s current location for historical preservation purposes.

The main point of all of my comments about the city of Morehead trying to use Eminent Domain to seize the Freight Station Building is all about preserving our heritage through the preservation of what few historical buildings remain standing.

I just don’t understand why more people aren’t speaking up.

  4. rerquired voluntary compliance Says:

=D> the business leases the building from the property owners so ther are two seperate parties to pay off, the business owner, which is about bled dry from all the years of “that place is closing” (which is a common method for running some one out of business/ruining business) Since the city sees all the reciepts for alcohol sales for tax purposes then they know the rought gross sales and can figure out what effects the rumors have on sales and extrapolate a income estimate and thus formulate the offer on the business after several years of rumormongering. As for the worth of the building it is historic whether designated historic or not, it is likely the oldest structure in town, older folks have claimed to me that when young, holes in the boards were pointed out that were bullet holes from the “Rowan Co. War”, that occured in the generation after the War Between the States and is even somewhat nationally know amoung fueds.

The building would likely cost more to move that it is worth but as one of at least the 3 oldest buildings in town and a marker of days past that puts the monetary value somewhat unimportant.

Look at the “passenger station” on the south side is a little metal placque that is the height of the flood of 1937? when water was nearly from one hillside to the other accros the valley.

THe “Freight Station” lived thru that flood also and who knows what else.

I dont care what happenes to the liquer store, like we need the number of beer stands in town we have, that if you can find a decent wine it is standing vertically and way above cellar tempeture, in a rebottled state full of sulfites and a synthetic “cork”. That is just as much a factor of the wholesalers monopolies granted by ABC, if one of 4 dont carry what you want you have to go out of state and mail back a bottle of decent wine. For the bible belt, where is any reference to Hebrews/Tribes of Israel drinking of beer being approved; even Noah met the standard of his generations and he apparently was prone to get into the second half of the flask. [-X

The ammount of stuff we put up with today is less than they will get away with tomorrow, forget what the grandchildren will go thru? :(

  5. straightalk Says:

the land in question goes to main street and will include all of the old buildings on main street. compared to freight station it is a large amount of land.

  6. kat Says:

Regarding the Reptile Convention Center. Everyone claimed they had plenty of parking. Now everything is suppose to be leveled so more can attend the snake shows? Typical politics around here. Someone somewhere should be able to stop the madness. I don’t have a clue who’s in charge of destroying Morehead for the almighty buck but they must have really deep pockets. :-??

  7. JSL Says:

Alot of it goes back to time when things were a lil breezy and we could no longer drive straight down mainstreet.

  8. kat Says:

Got that right JSL. I thought it but didn’t say it. There’s about 6 people in the county that control the fate of the rest of us. That’s a dirty shame.

  9. JSL Says:

Not only are they destroying downtown but look at 32 North.State just spent all the money redoing the road due to heavy traffic and they decide to stick a new Walmart in middle of it.And if you live up Bratton you have to use construction entrance to get on the road.Plus now they are clearing off both hillside on old Viking Drive for strip amlls or whatever other curse L.B. can lay in there.

I have only been in the CC one time.I have to say its a nice building. But city could have used money better.
1)Could have straightened Main St back out.
2)Helped retain and refurbish the historical buildings.
3)Used money to attract some JOBS into area.Look at tax money they are missing out on by alot of people,me included, who drive out of county to work.WHat Sealmaster,Guardian, and Family Dollar pay does not cut it nowadays.
4)Help someone put some quality entertainment in.Site behind Sonic is Ok for Buffalo Wildwings but they seem to have trouble getting the cinema.A Bowling Alley,Comic/Music Club,or something would even be better than what we have.

One high note least Morehead will have new mayor next election.

  10. Russell Howard Says:

[-X Morehead charges a special tax on food, uses this money to build a conf.center for who knows what. Then they outlaw smoking in their town losing some of their tax on food money.
They want to demolish historic buildings.without paying the owners a fair price.
I am thankful I don't have to live in Morehead, and I no longer eat in their resturants,so I don't help support the snake show building. I also don't smoke, but if I did I think I should have the right to do so....

  11. kat Says:

I ‘drive-thur’ at least twice a day since I don’t cook and the only reason I have a kitchen is because it came with the house. Are you telling me that MY money is going into the pockets of the Reptile center? —-as far as the smoking goes, that is one reason hubby dearest wouldn’t move here is because neither of us can stand cigerette smoke(asthma), and we couldn’t even go in the bank without being run out. So, I am glad that it’s banned from inside buildings now.

  12. nighthawk Says:

    straightalk,
You said “the land in question goes to main street and will include all of the old buildings on main street.”
however I couldn’t help but notice that those old buildings appear to be occupied by local business establishments.
Who is recieving the rent on these buildings if they are now pubicly owned?
Is the city allowing the former owner to continue collecting the rent? Or, Is the city now collecting rent on these buildings?, Or, Is the city allowing business owners to operate out of those old buildings rent free?
I know, it’s alot of questions, and yet the same question ask diffrent ways, but a lot is left unexplained.

  13. nighthawk Says:

    Russell,
I couldn’t agree with you more. I ran across this article written by Mayor Collins by accident while researching something unrelated. Give it a read, but more importantly read the comments at the bottom of the article.

  14. nighthawk Says:

It will surprise if that other site publishes my comment, but I added one inviting him over to RowanReview just the same.

  15. straightalk Says:

In response to your comments as to the local business operations on the proposed land purchase by tourism in question it is my understanding that the purchase is not complete. So any rents would go to the current owner. If tourism purchased the property then they would receive the rents. However I’m sure the buildings would come down shortly after purchase. I’ll let you know more later.

  16. nighthawk Says:

    straightalk,
I do appreciate your input on this matter, so this isn’t directed towards you. However I do have to agree with Dave that the old Freight Station should be worth at least 1/3 of the Breeze property–and that’s if I don’t consider that the building could be the Original Passenger Station as some old pictures suggest. You can see some of those pictures at kentuckystewarts.com (Direct Link).
Who exactly owns the newer brick depot building? and why not tear it down instead?
Maybe a better option would be taking the buildings between the Public Library and the Conference Center. Looks to me like they would gain more parking in that area. And if the Public Library is moved out by the current WalMart site, then look at the options for parking lot expansion in the future.

  17. pseudonomen Says:

    nighthawk,
About everything you just said has been said before, and although I was being a little sarcastic about condemning the Folk Art Center and Utility Plant Board properties, I still say condemn the property that UsBank sits upon and the tract behind it, Leave the old Freight Station alone.
That old Freight Station is one of only a handfull of places left standing that represents both our heritage and our history.
Tourism might should buy it at a resonable price, but work with the Historical Society to restore it’s interrior to reflect it’s original use. The old Freight Station is one place that shouldn’t be relocated or demolished.
At the rate the City and County are going, why don’t they just bring in some big dozers and level what is left to rebuild/rewrite our history and heritage the way they think it should be, and not the way it is.
Does anyone else see what TechKnomen was warning us about? It’s all unfolding right under our noses, at the local level, and that scares me.

  18. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

I have said for years that a new resivoir impoundment and hydro electric dam could be built just above grange city and slate creek or below slate creek and solve a lot of problems by flooding most of Rowan Co. and salt lick creek and maybe slate creek, what ever is left above water could go back to the counties that Rowan was formed from, so there. People want to go metro or eliminate counties could live with that eh? I a on high ground so there.

I have to ASK KAT or ANYBODY that eats out more than twice A WEEK what do you eat that does not exceed the RDA allowance for SODIUM/Salt/MSG?
In just one meal? Or do you just pop some (more) lasix to deal with the bloat from the exorbitant salt intake? Let alone the non-disclosure attitude of not listing the ingrediants in the “secret recipe”s that mostly at MSG for “flavor enhancement”

  20. kat Says:

    IT’S ALIVE!

I thought you might have ‘called in’ your postings like other things lately.

I DO NOT take lasix or HCTZ and I am allergic to MSG. I do not even own a salt shaker. My sodium level the last time it was checked about a month ago was actually a tad low.

  23. kat Says:

So now good old Mayor Collins broke a 3-3 tie to MORE land from Larry Breeze and destroy what little tad of old buildings there are left in the town of Mayberry. I remember not so long ago the REPTILE CENTER saying that THEY didn’t have a parking problem. Hummmmmmm. I can’t believe the town is letting them get away with all this destruction. Who died and left them God? Someone told me today that if you look at at arial view of Morehead it is half parking already! Has anyone heard of multi-level parking? They certainly need that at the hospital.

  24. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

Multilevel parking costs around 7x or more the price per/lot of a flat parking lot. So if you can aquire land for $10per year per lot that goes to $70per year per lot for a parking garage and they dont last. Concrete gets more brittle the older it gets as it gets harder and that is part of what killed that woman in Lexington, that slab broke loose and squished her as it had become so brittle that a slight hit from a SUV and SNAP it went. Look at the old bridges crumbling like the 519 bridge about to be rebuilt. 30-40 years is the lifespan for most concrete bridges IF they are built right (not by the mob) Road Salt also eats away at them.

  26. pseudonomen Says:

No, I can’t explain it to you. Though it appears as if Morehead’s officials are attempting to promote tourism by holding so-called “Intellectual Events” at a so-called “Conference Center”.
I get the impression that it’s “To heck with the locals, and with what they want! Let’s pick the pockets of the intellectual crowd, after all that’s where the money is at…” (not an actual quote there, just my perception of what is going on).
I get the impression that the officials may feel as though we don’t have anything unique to offer in the competative feild of the tourism industry, and are being a little creative at our expense.
Sure, I can see future tax revenues comming from the hotels and restaurants, I can see the intellectual crowd driving for miles to see a once in a lifetime display of sorts. But I can’t see distroying our history and heritage in the process.

  27. pseudonomen Says:

    JSL,
I agree with most of what you have written, the only exception being that all of this seems to be stemming from a point in time before the Breeze administration.
We have to find the roots of the demolition tree.

  30. nighthawk Says:

Speaking of historic landmarks, I happend upon this article concerning the old courthouse.
“The arts are an important facet of the history and culture in the eastern Kentucky region,” said Sen. Walter Blevins (D-Sandy Hook). “This facility will provide Morehead with an arena for local artisans to display their artwork and performance skills for their fellow citizens. To save this historic building is a tremendous accomplishment.”

Well, I suppose it could be considered a “tremendous accomplishment” if you consider that it was chalked up for demolition to make room for a parking lot close to 30 years ago.

At least they saved the exterrior of the building. I hear that the inside has been stripped of it’s historical significance.
Can anybody confirm or deny this?

It’s well documented that old courthouse building isn’t our first courthouse. So I have to ask why the historical society (or anyone for that matter!) don’t step in and preserve the old Freight Station.

  31. nighthawk Says:

Ok, The link has suddenly expired or something, but it’s still in google’s cache.

If it is done early (Lunchtime) on a slow news day it will likely play at 5:30p and 11pm IF you catch a slow news day and the video is Mini DV or better quality (not cellphone or VHS on a cloudy day especially) mostly still shots and maybe some short sound clips. Don’t submit more than 3-5 min. of shots to be edited. Down to less than 40sec.

  40. TechKnomen Says:

If you take video to them take the camera with the powersupply so they can capture the video straigh from the device that took it so it is the best possible quality. Emailing video dosen’t always work for best quality

  42. pseudonomen Says:

    nighthawk,
The only reason the old courthouse is still standing is because it was placed on the Historical Register (07-21-1983).
Only other places I see on the Historical Register is MSU (Bounded by University Blvd., Battson Ave. and Ward Oates Dr. Added 11-25-1994) and the Old voting houses built by the WPA (added 04-09-1998).

I don’t see anything added to the Historical Register since April 9, 1998… not even an Old Haldeman School.

    Look for yourself http://www.nr.nps.gov/nrloc1.htm
Under the heading Search by Location
    click on State and County

The old Freight Station, if not listed as historical, must be pre-historical, seeing that it is older than those WPA voting houses and likely older than the old “new” courthouse.

I have also noticed the b0z attack upon this site, and it brings this google warning to my mind… :-??

  43. pseudonomen Says:

Long story short, It would appear that nothing in Rowan County has been added to the national historical register in 9 years.

  44. pseudonomen Says:

Come to think of it, Where can we view the permit to convert the old courthouse into an arts center?

It would be logical to believe that the renovation of a charted historical site would require some sort of a permit, especially if signifigant alterations are being made to the structure.

What alterations have been made to the interrior of the old courthouse? and were they permitted to make those alterations to transform the building into an arts center?
Could we the taxpayers be looking at more fines? Since it is quite apparent that [after Laurel Creek] the officials aren’t going to be held liable for anything, except under title of office, and the fines are going to be passed on to the county’s tax payers.

  45. pseudonomen Says:

Does anyone know the Rowan County Historical Society’s stand on the old Freight Station?
I personally haven’t seen any big news articles in the paper about how the local Historical Society is devoted to saving it or anything…

    Anyone know?

  46. pseudonomen Says:

I realize that this may seem as a non-issue after the Tourism Commission has worked out a deal with some local property and business owners to secure a site that will provide for around 45 parking spaces. I understand how most would assume that the Freight Station Building may no longer be in jeopardy.

Until we see something in writing that states that the city Will Not condemn the Freight Station, we will have to consider the possibility that they will continue their efforts condemn and demolish this historic building.

  47. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

Allie Young Law Office was given a historical marker about 4-5years ago? (as well as new shingles) that building is not as old as the Freight Station by far. it is hard to say just exactly how much they paid for that commercial sign. whatever the amount, it serves no useful public purpose such as instructing people of where to find a fallout shelter after a nuclear attack because it is unlikely to be EMP resistant/proof. they quit testing that emergency alert whistle on top of the old police/fire station some years back. maybe they decided to quit maintaining it, or it broke? and they didn’t want to spend the money to fix it? doubt anyone would know the difference between a steady and warbling blast anyways in todays society. such a shame. supposedly we’re supposed to “stay tuned” for the emergency alert system to be transmitted over the transistor dominated air waves… but what about EMP? do we have any tube stations within range? do we have tube television sets now? no!
anyone want to translate this into something that people are willing to accept? if we let them remain in denial, then we’ve had it.

Thanks for pointing this out ; I just saw the movie idiocrassy and it just reinforces what I already knew that polygyny for smart folks needs to be more socially acceptable and get to it before the “worthless eaters” (the population reduction crowd’s term_) completely out breed us so the elete 4thriek types can feel more justified in culling the herd.
    most of us will survive doomsday it is the weeks after that could be really miserable;

come to think of it, that commercial sign can serve the public service of being a constant reminder of corporate government. maybe we should snap a picture of that sign before they tear down the old freight station and post it on a plaque in six or seven years to serve as a subtle reminder of this seemingly endless transition period. place the words “government: once governed by the people, for the people, but no more… it has become a money hungry beast.” if i were to suggest the rest of the words that are coming to mind it would appear as obscenities to some, but would not be as obscene as what modern commercialized corporate government is doing to all of us.

  63. TechKnomen Says:

I have seen a couple of events I did not know about on that sign BUT if it was just moved over to the southwest about 20feet the roof-line and that dish of the Freight Station would not block it for west bound traffic as much. Just a little bit further towards the Folk art center and it would still be in front of the conference center. Of course lots of folks will see it when traffic backs up during rush hour.
I dont think the Freight station’s roof needs replace either just patched and repainted would do wonders. Why not a cracker barrel style old general store in their??

  64. TechKnomen Says:

    “Money Hungry Beast” of government?: Taxes for the vast majority of us wee people are not needed EXCEPT for the police state information age to track near about everything on a “private individual civilian human resource”;
Income and private property taxation, “occupation tax” payroll tax and such could all be phased out in this “free country” given the VAST almost unimaginable holdings in the dozens of trillions globally of ( CAFR variety) govt. “institutional funds” but ferget I said that; what is on ESPN3 FOX?

The city of Morehead seeks to tear down one of (if not THE) oldest buildings in town. These folk want to demolish the Old Freight Station calling it a eye sore. It was named in the news paper that councel can’t understand why nobody wants the 7 million…

my source is moreheadnews.com look in cellar 6 for it.

three full years later it has depreciated to under a million?

guess who’s fault it is for not paying attention.

hint.. not mine, i was warning people way before then.

  66. TechKnomen Says:

this site did not exist 3yrs ago and noone had claimed to have just discovered this but it is rekindled by the 90,000 offer that was made and the threat of eminent domain that was talked about…

  67. TechKnomen Says:

    on the slander issue:
(USA Today reported) that Scheff pursued the case even though she knew Bock would be unable to pay an award. Bock could not afford an attorney and did not appear at the trial. Scheff told USA Today that she wanted to make a point to those who unfairly criticize others on the Internet. “I’m sure [Bock] doesn’t have $1 million, let alone $11 million, but the message is strong and clear. People are using the Internet to destroy people they don’t like, and you can’t do that.”

    //www.legaline.com/2006/10/113m-award-for-internet-defamation.html

Of course a lein as (the Montana Freeman operated) can become a piece of commercial paper that can be bought and sold between banks so a 11million ruling could be sold to a off shore bank to be placed in their assets so they can loan credit out and the lein never goes away even if only bought for $110,ooo as some have found out, even poor folk can have leins put again em’/

  68. out of the loop Says:

still as nit-picky as ever i see. grin

no one suggested that this site was around four years ago, but i assumed that most of us who are here have the ability to read the snooze. it’s like deja-vu all over again. here the two of us agree and work towards a common goal, yet nit-pick one another to death.

thank you for pointing out that i am not you, but i will be leaving now. and when the new library is built in new-town then don’t say i didn’t tell you so. when the freight station is all but stolen from the owners, and the torn down, not relocated, then don’t say that i didn’t try to help. i am only a guest here, and as a guest, my only option is to politely leave. i know when i’m not wanted.
i will leave a final note with all of you whom think that your better than i, techknomen is right about internet stalkers, but other then that, i have the right to use any handle i want to use. i have used a handle since the cb radio days, and i will continue to do so.
kat, you do the scanner news, and you know that the police, ambulance and firemen all use a handle for a radio id. they use numbers. cb radio operators use a handle, which is a nickname. bloggers use a user-name or nickname.
it is none of your business who i am, the same as it is none of my business who you are. i don’t suffer from grandosis and don’t feel the urge to put my legal (unconstitutional) name upon everything that i write or say.
i come here trying to help, but i can see that nobody is willing to work together for a common cause.
techknomen i understand, but i can’t understand someone who feels the need to call everyone a nut.
“loopy” huh, why not just accuse me of being the town drunk, local drug addict, or the scum of the earth?
some people complain about the city, but are more then willing to accept the word of city administrators over the word of someone who’s been out in the trenches trying to gather information to support a common cause that most of us share.
I will move back to topix and moreheadnews, and other places where i am welcome to speak my mind without being considered a nut. at least i can find my writings from those sites listed with the search engines.

  69. TechKnomen Says:

All well said except that the “loopy” tag was not mine but was originally direct towards me not you.

I surely try to be polite but then some folks walk all over you operating as “nice guys finish last” and lack common respect(or fear, I’ll take either) or manners and want something fer nothing and complain when they get it.
I however will leave when I have to or want to not because someone runs me off or trys to. In fact I stay because of this type of treatment up to a point I decide, so goodbye if you must go, I doubt it will affect the google hit revenue that much LOL?!?!?

  70. Jarrod Says:

So what is it that you guys have against the reptile show…? I would think that community minded folks like yourselves would like anything that pumps money into Moreheads economy…I guess I was wrong…

  71. kat Says:

Oh Jarrod, wake up and smell the ’scales’. Something is ‘fishy’ here. Do you honestly think that all the Snake/Reptile shows are going to be enought to pay for that building? The history we lost there was priceless. Also, I wonder WHY the director in charge lives in Bath county but makes decisions for those of us in Rowan County? Is that kinda like the government in Washington deciding what happens to a bridge on 519? I know the ‘elected’ officals are suppose to live in the district they are running in, with exception of course in the last election when Mr. Frazier who lives in District 1? ran on the District 2 ticket. Oh well, the locals are just pushed to the sides as a nuisance anymore. The powers that be want fresh blood pumped into the city.

  72. Jay Says:

I have to think the folks that rant have change phobia and do not realize that it takes new ideas and ways of stimulating new commerce even if it is one day a month. There is no harm in a reptile show or any other show for that matter. It does not block traffic, prevent the good fat folks of the area from getting their cholesteral injections at the drive thru, nor does it any harm. What it does do is generate revenue that would otherwise not be there as well as offer a means of education in an area that it is much much needed. Lighten up folks and accept change and new ideas. These are the type of things that prevents your taxes you do pay from going through the roof. YOU pay it or new revenue will. Your choice.

  73. kat Says:

Well howdy thar Jay. I may be FAT, I am certainly a FOLK and I know I’m GOOD but surprisingly my cholesterol is only 209, WELL below the national average. So your little personal jab didn’t even make it through my epidermis.

Personally I would rather pay higher taxes and live in PEACE AND QUIET than in a big city. Remember I lived in Chicago 15 years. I like the slow pace of Flemingsburg, etc., compared to the traffic nightmares here. Yes, please do just keep building……..IF YOU BUILD IT…….THEY WILL COME!

  74. kat Says:

Ya know. I’m sick of this crap. I’m sitting here worried to death about a biopsy for bladder cancer and then have to deal with your crap also. Talk to the wind. I’m not responding to your personally attacks, nor am I making them anymore, go in peace. By the way, I need a 3rd opinion, is the hemorraging from the bladder, etc., from “something I ate”? I’m certainl you must believe so.

  75. kat Says:

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE….GO BOO YOURSELF!:P

  76. Jaime Says:

I think I should bring it to your attention that the reptile show and the conference center are two totally separate entities. The reptile show is held at the conference center - that’s it. The conference center does not hold a reptile show. The building is rented once a month (sometimes more as the promoters also promote the card and comic show there). Now, speaking as an “insider”, the majority of the public that attends these shows are from out of town. Door count is usually around 350. That’s 350 new people coming into your city renting hotel rooms, eating a few meals and filling their gas tanks all of which include taxes paid to YOUR city every month. On another note, someone has to be paid to tend to all these people. Are they not building a new hotel in Morehead? At least you have the college. That’s more than most small towns have. You can’t gripe about the lack of jobs when you want to gripe about the city’s growth and what it takes to make it a growing community. You can’t have it both ways. Hope I haven’t offended anyone. Just my 2 cents (plus some maybe :) )

  77. kat Says:

Jaime, I completely understand that the reptile show is not put on by the conference center. It just the Main Attraction there on a regular basis. Morehead doesn’t need another motel/hotel, etc., the ones here are empty most of the time. As far as the college goes? I appreciate the education I received there however, I don’t like living in a college town and I’m not griping about lack of jobs. One thing that just gnaws me to the bone is COLLEGE kids being allowed to VOTE in OUR elections, IE., the alcohol being voted in by them, and THEN THEY go back to THEIR hometowns and leave US with the mess. They should NOT be allowed to vote and make decisions that affect forever the lives of those of us that live here 24/7 when they are only here for 2-5 years.

I never in my life thought I would have to walk into a store here in Morehead that sold alcohol. I am grateful that there is finally a smoking ban.

  78. Jarrod Says:

    Kat,

I assure you that no one was personally attacking you. Quite simply we do not know you so how could anyone have known to take personal stabs at you.

I promote the reptile show at the conference center once a month. I also have a forum online where I posted a link to this thread so you could get a few locals with a different viewpoint to engage in this conversation.

I will be glad to answer any questions concerning the reptile shows for you.

We are in Morehead not to destroy your history as you seem to think but, to try to give the community something fun to do on a Sunday afternoon and promote a little commerce.

Anyway, expect a few extra visitors to this thread.

Feel free to visit our webpage/forum at http://www.ekreptileshow.com

Hope all goes well with the biopsy…

    Jarrod Greer-

  79. Jay Says:

Well said Jaime…there is a process of happenings. They are making it sound like the powers to be built the conference center FOR the reptile show and event…get real. The reptile show and event as suck soley took advantage of the opportunity to have it there once it was ALREADT built, thus revenue. Accept change. Morehead MUST have an economy boost to support the college alone. If it werent for the college (outsiders) might I add, it would be a ghost town. And Kat I never called you fat personally nor does your cholesteral level or bladder biopsy have anything to do with the price of rice, taxes, or what goes on at the conference center. I hope all goes well for you, but I cant help to think your narrow-minded ways can be fixed. My goodness, I even think I saw a person of color in Morehead the other day whats this world coming to, isnt that the perception? Get a life, quit worrying about things you cant control, accept people and modern times for what they are. You not the only person that matters and not all decisions locally or nationally revolve around your way of thinking, nor will they ever. The truth hurts and if I could have a nickel for the number of times I have been offended(by close friends might I add) or disagreed with something Id be rich, why worry and cry over it?

  80. Heather Says:

I don’t understand why the reptile show is even considered a part of the problem. The show promotor has no connections with the convention center other then renting the space on a monthly basis. There have been no demands from the reptile show people for more parking. The show is held on Sunday and there is plenty of parking.

Like mentioned above, most of the show attendees (including myself) are from out of town. There are vendors who come from as far away as Georgia and New York. Many of the people do come in the night before the show, stay at a hotel, patronize local restuarants and pay sales tax while we are in town. Most of us are typical people with children and normal jobs and reptiles are a hobby.

The reptile show is not just for selling reptiles, but is a social and educational event as well. It is a great place to bring children, you will see more variety then you will find at most zoos as well as the opportunity to get much closer to the animals. I love to show off my animals to children, letting them pet the ones that are safe and educating them about the care and a natural habitats of the animals.

I can’t believe that city residents are being hostile to an event that brings revenue, educational opportunities and family entertainment to the city. I am assuming that the people complaining are ignorant to the true situation and are just looking for a scapegoat.

  81. nighthawk Says:

    Hello,
I for one have not complained about the Big Store building being taken down.
I have not complained about the Reptile Show.
Matter of fact, I don’t think that I have ever complained about the Conference Center being built, even though I have to question the reasoning behind its location, and the relationship of the property owners who have profited from buy outs to city and county government.
And I realize that it’s all set up for those who are in, or have been in power to profit from these things.
Look back and see who owned the old Maloney’s building when the new section of the 32 connector was built. Who owned the property that the Williams & Nickell Bulk Plant sit upon when the bypass went through?
Who was it who is responsible for main street being curvy and lacking parking spaces to the extent that all of the local business’ went out of business? and who bought up a big square of that land (later to be purchased for Conference Center parking)?
This isn’t about a reptile show. It’s about people catching on to local politics.
More importantly, it’s about saving one little remaining tatter of our heritage…
    The Freight Station Building.
It’s not that we aren’t open to change, we just want to preserve a few little remnants of our heritage.
Is wanting to preserve a historic landmark so bad?
Mount Sterling is a big city, and they have managed to preserve their historic sites.
    The questions are:
Why Didn’t The Officials Put The Conference Center In Another Location?
and since they decided to build it where it is,
Why Don’t They Just Leave The Freight Station Alone?
The Freight Station is among the last significant places representing our history and our heritage.
It’s not that we can’t accept change. It’s only that we want to hold on to what few remaining historic places that are left.

  82. kat Says:

Ya know, as I was drifting off to sleep I thought the same thing to myself, no one needs to know about my cholesterol reading or the dozen or so list of other chronic health problems I deal with daily.

OK, About the Reptile Show. Heather says it’s a great place to take the family for entertainment. My first reaction is Are you crazy? I would call putting my child near a snake intention child abuse. Secondly, of course it’s held on Sunday. Yes, I know many that would rather their child be ‘entertained’ at a snake show than be sitting in Sunday School learning about the love of Christ. Jesus died for you whether you like it or not and Satan, the snake, comes to kill, steal and destroy. I pass it all the time on the way to Church where ALL Bible versions and Christian beliefs teach that God turned Satan into a snake and said that he would forever crawl upon his belly as the lowest of creatures and eat the dust of the land.

Oh, I know you don’t want to hear anything to do with that. To each his own. Think I’ll start a collection of odd fur-balls coughed up by cat lovers convention. It would be just as interesting. As my grandmother said, the only good snake is a dead snake. Ok, I’m sitting down and medicated, go ahead and let me have it! I took a oath when I became a nurse to help and not hurt people, but honestly anyone that puts themselves in the position of handling a venomus animal gets what they deserve. Walking through the woods, etc., and it happening accidently, I can understand, but being around them for FUN? I don’t understand the thought process of that.

  83. kat Says:

By the way, as someone recently asked, how much did that little short dumpy scrolling sign cost? You can only read one or two words at a time as you go down the road right near a busy intersection and it’s only made so that short people like me can see it. Couldn’t they afford a taller pole?

  84. kat Says:

Oh good gravy! How could I forget! Jay mentioned about seeing someone of ‘color’ in Morehead. Well THAT dear sir is NOT were I am narrow minded but seems everyone else in Morehead is. My husband is from COSTA RICA. NOT Puerto Rico, NOT Mexican, etc. and is a full-blooded CENTRAL AMERICAN INDIAN. When he first came down he he was still running the Chicago Marathron every years in the 80’s and many a time idiots would yell at him to go back to Mexico or get out of ‘their’ country. Nothing makes him madder than knowing that OUR people killed and raped the natives here when WE stole the land of his people. Anyway, still to this day several in my family say that they can’t believe I married a ‘person of color’. I didn’t! I married a human being whom happens to be darker skinned than I am. I, myself, am surprised with the kind of upbringing I had that I literally don’t look at a person’s color of skin. We are ALL God’s children and being a racist is as narrow minded as it gets.

  85. Steve Says:

KAT ARE YOU SERIOUS THERE ARE NO VENOMOUS SNAKES AT THE SHOW!!!!DO YOU REALLY THINK EVERY SNAKE IS VENOMOUS!!!

Seriously Kat sorry to hear about life and how miserable it has made you, obviously it’s made you want to make the rest of the world as miserable as you are???? Sad thier are people in the world who build things and others that exist solely to tear them down apparnatly you fit in the latter category. Seriously the last thing Morehead needs (or any other college town i’ve been in) is another liquor store a little extra parking might mean one less puddle of vomit to walk through from the saturday night college carousers and assorted drunks in town i’d think someone espousing these christian values would welcome the removal of a liquor store. Oh and as to your insulting diatrabe on those of us that enjoy the reptile hobby God forbid we raise our kids to have a hobby other than sitting on the couch watching what once would have been considered soft corn porn on mtv and actually keep their minds and bodies interested in something positive that will spur their interest in science and biology. For your information a lot of good christians with open minds attend our shows as the shows run until 4 o’clock don’t know what church you attend most churches let out well before that. Your reference that people who enjoy snakes and that bring their children to these shows are abusing their children is ignorant to the point of being laughable. It’s a good thing ignorance isn’t a crime like child abuse as surely you would have been convicted long ago. Oh and by the way not many snakes are venomous you showed your ignorance again there and morehead is a non-venomous show. Good luck with you furball collection, sorry you feel the only good snake is a dead snake, some people feel that way about cats btw, but i guess that’s not ok because there cute and fuzzy. At least snakes are a naturally occuring animal in this country and not an invasive species like cats that have decimated native bird populations. Well i gotta go my kitty is meowing and is hungry……………you unfortunately remind me of one of these people we run into every so often that is so proud of themselves when the kill a snake, happy they killed a venomous copperhead, when we see the snake it turns out to be a harmless rat snake and 3 months later you here them complaining about the rodents around there house. broaden your horizons a bit Kat contrary to the old expression ignorance is not bliss

  86. Jay Says:

Kat, I can appreciate that your not against races, bless you for that. But then you turn right around and insinuate the snake is the devil’s creature. HOW IGNORANT. If I were you I would beg God’s mercy and forgiveness for giving the devil that much credit, hun God’s creatures includes the snake, he created it as well as he did a kitten or whatever, Not the devil OR for the devil. OH, and sorry to dissapoint you not only am I a reptile lover ( I dont like most dogs, but to each thier own, I dont bash them) But I Love the Lord. I am also sorry to dissapoint you, there was no “snake” in the garden. The “serpent” that told Eve to sin was no serpent. It is a parable for her carnality speaking to her, talking her into doing wrong, just like the voice we all have that we fight day in and day out. Kind of like the voice you listen to that tells you snakes are of the devil. Maybe if you were not a hippocrit and attended more services, or better yet studied the word in your free time, which is much more important than showing up at a building dressed up, instead of crying on the internet you would know this. I am sorry but no christian would be as angry and bitter as you seem to be. A real christian Kat, doesnt get caught up in the goings on of the world as you seem to be doing. Pray about it, I think you have alot to be remoreful for. Stop being selfish and realize that there are millions of people out there other than yourself that do not think as you do and it doesnt make them any less of a person. I hope you own an animal of any kind and know how it feels to own an animal that God has given us that brightens your day the same way reptiles doin our hobby, no different, except to your closed minded way of thinking.

  87. Jay Says:

Oh and by the way Kat, I am sorry your grandma learned you ignorance. What a shame….

  88. podge Says:

Boy, the ignorance shown by this “Kat” character is truly sad indeed. “The only good snake, is a dead snake:? Do you know it wasn’t long ago that other narrow-minded people said the same about Blacks and Native Americans?

People who think like you are more dangerous than any snake I have ever met (and I lived in Florida). FTR, me and my three children attend the Morehead show, but we usually get there late since mass doesn’t end until around 11:30. Sorry if I just blew up your “devil-worshiping snake lover” theory.

    Enjoy your health.

“As far as the college goes? I appreciate the education I received there however, I don’t like living in a college town and I’m not griping about lack of jobs. I never in my life thought I would have to walk into a store here in Morehead that sold alcohol. I am grateful that there is finally a smoking ban.” - Kat

Ok, I’ve been comming to this site for quite a few months now and have only posted once before, but after this comment I can’t keep my mouth shut. If you hate living in a college town so much then why not move? It is simple enough, Morehead was a college town long before you came and will continue to be one long after you are gone Kat. There’s nothing you can do about it so why complain? Embrace it! Also, so what if the college kids can vote in elections here? Do you realize the miniscule amount of students that even bother voting in Rowan Co. elections? And as for the alcohol? Jeeze people! Yes, I know we live in the Bible Belt but come on and get with the times! Would you rather go back to the times when Rowan was a dry county and you had kids running back and forth from Mt. Sterling and other “wet” counties with their loot and getting into accidents all over the place? Wouldn’t you rather them spend their $ in Morehead? Selling alcohol in Morehead is such a joke issue. Every time I speak to my family from Detroit they seem floored by the stories I tell them about Morehead. They cannot grasp that there are still places in this country where people have “dry” counties that do not allow liquor and also places that reschedule Trick-or-Treat (it’s supposed to be ON Halloween people, duh…) I am also quite suprised that after living somewhere such as Chicago with so much culture, tolerance and new frontiers all around, you seem to be so closed minded and set in the past. The smoking ban you mentioned, what horse crap! I realize that smoking does lead to Cancer and other such health problems but to ban it completely? As a smoker myself, this ban seems like just another way that the government (even small town government) is trampling over our rights as American citizens. Yes yes, my rights end where yours begin but it’s true the other way around too! It seems ok for people to have an arsonal of guns around here that they could accidentally kill someone with but smoking….that obviously crosses the line…It should be up to the businesses themselves whether or not to allow smoking in their facilities, not a bunch of whiny officials or citizens in the minority. I and many others in this town see the smoking ban as a form of discrimination against smokers. I mean, how would you like to have to stand out in the rain, snow, cold etc…just because a bunch of people don’t like your habit? Ugh, I don;’t know why I even bother….

  90. Jay Says:

Very well said Star. You have a good head on your shoulders.

  91. Jaime Says:

OK, I am going to say a few more things and I believe I’ll bow out of this one since it is getting waaaay off topic.

Essentially I felt the need to reply because I felt the reptile show (the show that we have lost money on but have such a love for the hobby that we are determined to push forward if only for the EDUCATIONAL aspect of it) was getting pushed around as a bad thing. Yes, it’s educational. Even if it is to teach children that you shouldn’t pick up every little snake you see in the back yard. To say that education in life science is child abuse truly is something you should re-evaluate in your mind. (BTW, venomous snakes are illegal to own in KY and are definately not something that is present let alone available at the show.)

I agree that if there are “historical” places in any town, everything should be done to keep them there.

I was very much offended by the snake show/Satan comments. I was raised in church. I am in no way shape or form some Satan worshipping crazy snake lady. Didn’t God create EVERY creature? That’s what I was taught. You said it yourself, you should love or at least respect all of God’s gifts to us (people, animals, the wonderful earth around us, etc). Don’t judge unless you know a little more about the topic you are discussing and the people you are “throwing stones” at.

OK, after reading all your ‘rants’ about the serpent in the Garedenof Eden not being a REAL SNAKE, etc., and then of course, Jesus was tempted by Satan in the form of a snake, etc., I called 3 different pastors from 3 different religions and everyone said the SNAKE was real and it is evil. This was the Pentecostal, Baptist and Methodist, I called. You must go back and really read your Bible and not something someone just told you. A sermon I have heard many a time from several different religions goes something like this: Cliffnote version: A cold snake was slithering along the road and it was freezing outside, a man passes by and the snake ask him to PLEASE pick him up and put him in his pocket so he can get warm. The man says, “No, you are a snake and you will bite me”. The snake replies “Oh no, I promise I will not bite you, I’m so cold please help me”, after going back and forth a bit the man picks the snake up and puts him in his pocket. After a bit the snake bites him. The man said, “You said you wouldn’t bite me!”, The snake replied, “You knew what I was when you picked me up”.

When was the last time you snuggled up to your snake? Played catch with it? Personally I’ve played hide and seek with them. Oh no honeychild I ain’t the ignorant one here. Satan and serpents are one in the same. The Bible tells me so.

Now, PLEASE lets get on with another topic. Fine you like snakes, no, I don’t think that makes you a devil worshipper, you just need a dose of the Holy Ghost to be delivered from your bondage. Ouch, that’s gonna hurt when it gets hurled back. Yes, snakes have their place but you must Walk quickly and always carry a hoe to chop their heads off.

Reptiles carry salmanilia is it Kat??
If you have ever spent all night rolling around on the floor and throwing up and well, the trots from salmanilia poisioning from eating in a resturant ’round chere or kissing a frog (amphibian i know) then you can appreciate how all reptiles even cute turtles can be poisonous. I have not read all this flurry of activity on here BTW but Hi Ya’all some run around with bumper stickers saying “Eve was Framed!” The bible is true but alot of stuff is veiled or in parable for various reasons, proof denys faith and faith is the substance of things hoped for but not seen so becareful most of us are already going where angles fear to tread…?

On the topic of full blooded (whatever) race, zactly howz anybody gonna prove that? The credibilty of the “zionist” claims are very much in doubt as the geneologies and other “proof” to document their claim to be the chosen people was destoyed in 70ad by the beast Neron Ceaser that demanded worship and “tithe” with the approved face/image on it in competition with the Creator. So full blooded this or that whop de dooo. NOW that said keep the law as much as your able and “go not unto the strange woman”, the bible is full of racialism (not racism)

Bigotry is to have discriminating taste keep reading the dictionary and the law dictionary(s) and notice how the commone vernacular don’t match up with a bunch of misconceptions like “intermarry” requires a marriage license so you are declaring your offspring to be misogenated if you beg the government for a privaledge to intermarry (Black’s 4th 5th and 6th editions definitions)

A “real christian” dose not get caught up in the cares of the world” sounds dangerously like the “why fight I’m on the next flight” mentality and that goes against the example [Yeshua] gave when he turned the tables on the money changers and later told the deciples to take money and buy two swords even on verse says that he that is without a sword should sell his cloak and buy one eh? Sounds contrary to the lets be passive feel good self help preaching so rampant today (that often barely mentions verses or studies at length bible stories)

Kat i think i love you everytime you post i hear the most beautiful sounding banjos playing the theme to deliverance in the background……….it warms my heart. Please invite me to the next flat earth society meeting you attend they really broke the mold when they made you didn’t think people like you even existed any more. Is there a soldiers funeral you can protest with Dr. sheppard somewhere.

I am a proud christion, however I can assure you Kat and I worship a different God. Mine is a loving, caring, and forgiving one. Kat YOU READ your bible and have those pastors as well. Your too ignorant to understand that is a parable you speak of. Its saying go ahead partake of the ways of the world, be not surprised of the outcome. It has nothing to do with an animal. You need to find God in the worst way if your that far off base, Im bowing out too, theres no excuse for your ignorance Kfat.

  98. TechKnomen Says:

funny you talk of ignor-ance and you are using your when you mean
you’re… just a little giggle, I make my fair share of mistakes and selective ignorance…

  99. Jarrod Says:

Just a note… while reptiles have been known to carry salmonella, you are about 1000 times more likely to contract this bacteria from the chicken or spinach you buy at the grocery store…

The biggest difference is that as a community the reptile crowd tries its best to warn people of the associated risk and inform folks on how to prevent contraction….You don’t see any signs at the grocery store warning you of the risk with poultry and veggies.

We give out hand sanitizer by the case at the shows and teach kids (and adults) about responsible pet ownership.

I am not going to pretend to involve myself in the religious debate here but I can tell you that I know 4 different pastors/priests of various faiths who are avid reptile keepers….

    Tecknomen Or Kat?
Who ya referencing in that attemp to metrosexual christianity?

Rationalize any behavior that was the pattern of the pharasees and saducees before the “day of the LORD” comming on the clouds of 70AD.

“ye shall not finish going through all the cities(even towns) before you see the Son of Man come…” look that up and connect it with “this generation” shall not pass away and such. Time statements are not parables eh?

  101. TechKnomen Says:

“Proud christian” is that like jumbo-shrimp or pretty-ugly or military itelligence?

Thought being humble and bowing toward his will was a big factor not pride? Like the pride of being correct or right? There is instilled in I’d say especially women of the correct spiritual spectrum a inate fear of snakes and spiders and such and it is plain smart not paranoid but there are now so many issues in this thread you would have to be a professional blogger with no life to run all the rabbit trails and address all the implications and permutations that would result… signed Techno caveman uggg.

  102. Scott Says:

Oh. Nice. Glad I found this little number.

As many of the reptile show folks know, I hold no punches and am brutally honest.

Kat, thats nice your a Christian. Its great in fact. It starts off showing me what a sheep you are like 90% of this area. The fact that you even brought that up when it had nothing to do with this “chat”. Pat yourself on the back for using religion to defend your stance. As I remember, the bible asks you to love all things God created didn’t it? But the only good snake is a dead snake huh? If thats your Christian philosophy, I am glad I’m not
