Historic Places, Public Parks, and Buyouts…

By nighthawk • Sep 15th, 2007 • Category: Opinions and Editorials

This is still a post in the works, the final post will have a new title and this main body will be heavily edited.

I went ahead and published this post in order to keep from cluttering the board by asking questions and posting comments where they really don’t belong.

Anyway, I do have a few questions and would appreciate any and all answers and comments.

First:

I’m curious if anyone knows how much the City Of Morehead paid for the BigStore and CarQuest Properties.

Extra information such as web site, newspaper name and publication date, etc… will also be greatly valued and appreciated.

Also,

I’m curious if Rodburn Park has is now owned by M.S.U. as a peace in this newsletter (pdf reader required) suggests, or if it is still a city park.

Excerpt from above link:

The Rodburn Park community
environmental education center, under
the supervision of Morehead State
University of Morehead, Kentucky
requests $2000 for a wildlife observation
hut. A three sided hut with one way
glass with benches, and a covered path
from the main trail to the hut, also
included will be the installation of bird
feeders. Work to be done by volunteers
and only materials will be purchased.

I’m also curious of which tract of land the city traded the Forest Service for Rodburn Park.

On the “School Annexation”:

I wonder if the city is willing to maintain Viking Drive starting on the day that annexation is finalized and continue the maintain and clean the “new” city street.

Do they have an extra street sweeping machine?

This is a whole smorgasboard of topics here, not to unconstrutively critisize but oh well, (pot callin the kettle black) as I will likely jump all over topic wise but, on Rodburn park this explains why the city (MOREHEAD, inc.) cut out all camping at that nice park, perhaps council business interests in the hotels too, as well as the oft cited “insurance” coverage, (looks like the Kroger center worked out that issue for the “Harvest Festival” after a year off?)

On the Auto Parts Barker/big store, it is apparently just a co-incidence that the CarQuest is “MOREHEAD, KENTUCKY inc.” as they have several stores/franchises listed with the North Carolina (inc.?) Secretary of State (inc.?)

Most folks reading your posts won’t know the “stakeholder” status that “owners” actually have, and those not paying attention don’t know about the recient Supreme Court rulings on tax revenue as a excuse for eminent domain.

I was thinking about a trip to the “Lost Liberty Hotel” and the “Just Deserts” coffee shop up in the New Hampshire “home” of one of the Supreme robed ones that ruled for the enhancements of seizure of properties for economic/tax re-venue even reducing the price to offset the costs of pursuing seizure
if a reluctant “owner”/stakeholder resists aquistion.

The case was brought from a situation in New Jersey where a developer wanted to build a office complex where some old homes were and some older folks resisted the bulldozers and the much reduced price they were offered after the intial first round of buyouts.

Unless the owner of the freight station property has Jerry Spence in his fave 5 cell phone list (or other celeb Johny Cockeran type) and want to spend more than $95,000 or can get the ACLU involved the message is take the offer and shut up.

ON annexation, welcome to the new werld oder. Collins:~”You elected the reps. that allow this”
    Forget the constitiution, or even common “respect for the opinions of mankind”;
they can do it so they will, their lawyers said so.

So does it matter if “the city” “discharged” $750,000 debt blips for the “Big Store” or 7million, the grant/development “money” came from the wizard of OZ checkbook and you can take it or leave it but thats the offer.

  2. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

Technically is what I am getting at; lawfully the big store was not “paid” for, but “discharged”, with scrip blip checkbook “money”.
    Whoz pushing the pencil
    eh Greenscam er Greenspan.

  3. TechKnomen Says:

Yeah, for those that are paying attention get thyself a old note and look on the paragraph beside the portrait of the dead guy:

“This note is Legal tender for all debts public and privat and can be exchanged for LAWFUL money…”

Of course I capitolised LAWFUL for emphasis and
that did satisfy the definition of a promisary note.

Blacks law dictionary on the definition of “Federal Reserve Note” plainly states it is only “in the likeness of a note” and dont promise to pay anything. You can go around passing the buck just make sure you have a chair when the music stops? LOL(not)

You are lost if you don’t know how we got here (from the days of commodity based constitutional “money” not scrip)

  4. psuedonomon Says:

Well i guess others can find my other comments about Freight Station elsewhere on this board, but most simply put, my point is that even IF they used the power of Eminent Domain to condemn the Freight Station, the parking spaces gained from that condemnation would have to be free public parking for everyone, and not exclusive parking for the Conference Center.
Would anyone like to protest this simple point?

  5. psuedonomen Says:

I owe, I owe, So off to work I go…

  6. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

I don’t see why the porking spots could not be designated parking for the conference center, is the liberry lot designated for it?
If “THEY” can do a domain seizure for near about anything with no real protest or court protections what’s to stop them the sheep?
I don’t have a dog in this fight except the future of any potential grandchillin’
    vanity vanity all is vanity

  7. psuedonomen Says:

I don’t see how you can or why you would say that you don’t see why the parking spots could not be designated parking for the conference center. Isn’t anyone else tired of the Great Old Ones (who appear to be) playing Monopoly with our tax money?
Has it come to the point where a Parking Ticket can’t be disputed in a court of law? and if so, what is stopping people from utilizing The Common Law in civil cases such as People V.S. Morehead, Kentucky? (T.B.A)… Whereas the claimant (the people of Morehead) charge that the defendant (city of Morehead) has engaged in conduct…
But need it go that far?
And if the people fail with a suit at common law, do not they have other Constitutionally protected forms of redress when all peaceful avenues have been exhausted?

  8. psuedonomen Says:

I could see utilizing Eminent Domain if the city were working with others to build parking for something that the “Red Nosed” (to quote a friend) seem to think we don’t deserve for reasons unknown.

  9. psuedonomen Says:

But if I buy into what is being said; which amounts basically to “The city can take what they want…” then I would be not only a fool, but also guilty of worshiping other gods, namely the state, county and city, which I do not, and will not. Not even if threatened with being beheaded.

  10. nighthawk Says:

Actually I dont think that Parking Ticketts go to court anymore, but I could be wrong.
I think that parking ticketts are disputed before the city councel ever since the people were conned into ammending the constitution and doing away with Police Court, Stripping Magistrates and the County Judge (now /exec) of their judicial authority.

  11. sort'a off topic Says:

Speaking of Rodburn Park, has anyone visited the picnic sites on the other side of the creek? I’m sure that some of the younger generations are thinking to themselves “picnic areas?…On the other side of the creek?… at Rodburn! …Where is Rodburn Park?”

Yep, the campground is closed down too. That is unless you enjoy “Day Camping” to phrase it similar to the way it was described over on that other topic.

Man! That Forest Ranger must have meant business when he was telling us youngins that if we don’t take care of those places nobody else will. Can anyone else remember them telling us those sorts of things?

Trouble is, now that we’re old enough to realize and appreciate what they were saying, just about everything is left in total ruins. Only subtle reminders of what was once there remain. Do these sentiments give a new meaning to “protect and preserve”? I think not, but have to question if it is far too late to protect and preserve those types of places.

  12. kat Says:

Way back in the early to mid 70’s, I remember going to Rodburn Park quite a bit. It was a nice picnic place and we enjoyed walking the trails. Haven’t been up there in decades. I didn’t realize it had also fell into great abyss.

  13. nighthawk Says:

It looks as though Rodburn Park is closed after 9:00 pm. Signs are posted warning people to vacate the park before 9pm or otherwise face prosecution.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Other signs are posted warning that you are under video surveillance, one sign reads “You Are Being Video Taped, Smile!” and another reads “SECURITY NOTICE Video Surveillance In Use On These Premises”.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Even though I didn’t have the time to go across the creek this evening, what I seen today (at the camping side of the park) is more than enough to convince me that the other side of the creek must be in a total state of ruins.

The pavilion and (now volleyball?) field looks pretty well maintained, and the latrine buildings on both sides of the park appear to be in good shape.

Lots of cleanup needs to be done in the old camping spots. The fire pits are full of trash, some of them have grills missing from the top, and a broken water fountain in need of mechanical repairs.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The camp pads are borderline of being non-repairable at this point and It’d take me the better part of a day to start making some headway at removing all of the litter.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I do have to agree with others that Rodburn should be re-open to camping and possibly Recreational Vehicle use at the old $7/night fee.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

With the Video Surveillance System that’s advertised on signs, and city police patrols, what could it possibly hurt to re-open the camping spots to overnight users?

Allowing overnight use to cross country backpack campers and Recreational Vehicles could help fund the upkeep of the park.

  14. pseudonomen Says:

Nice pictures there nighthawk, if maybe a bit disturbing to older generations. I was saving these, but since we are combining our efforts here now, I have decided to share a few of them.

These are pictures of another local park which I’m just about certain none of the younger generations have never heard of.

As you can see, only remnants remain of what was once a beautiful park.

Expect the other side of the creek over at Rodburn to be in similar condition.

It is a real shame that that we’re just now realizing what that Forest Ranger meant when he said ~”If YOU don’t take care of our public parks, nobody else will.” :( .

  15. BRAINSTRAINER Says:

    Hey nighthawk or pseudonomen
maybe we can put a group of people
together say 15 or so and get our parks back in shape and fixed and cleaned up and I would volanteer to help you all
with some of my spare time .

  16. kat Says:

With all those “WARNING” posted at Rodburn, seems to me that “they” are basically saying—GET OUT and STAY OUT. I go to Carter Caves anytime I need to ‘renew’ my spirit. It’s very peaceful to me there. It really is terrible that our ‘natural scenery’ is off limits and unkept. Oh but lets did deeper in our pockets and make room for more parking at the Reptile Center! :-?? X(

  17. BRAINSTRAINER Says:

Kat they can’t just say get out
and stay out cause that is a public park
and it belongs to us the people we pay
our taxes and we should be able to use
our parks and keep them fixed up and cleaned up I would volanteer my spare time to help nighthawk and pseudonomen
and whoever else they can get to help .
Why leave town to hike or picnic or whatever when we have parks and trails that can be fixed and cleaned with a group of people that’s willing and caring
and thinking of our younger people

  18. kat Says:

Good idea BrainStainer. WE THE PEOPLE should go in and take back what belongs to us. I am unable to do much of anything physical. However, if you want to have a “sit-in” or sit-down protest and stay in the park after hours, I’m more than willing. Most of the EMS crews will tell you once I’m down on the ground it will take more than a couple cops to move me! I’d be glad to park my ‘assets’ on the scene. Just name it! I’ve never been part of any protest but I’d do it to keep our freedom to have a nice safe place for families to enjoy. Why don’t we have a Rowan Review Picnic at Rodburn if we can make it through the filth and plan our ‘attack’! Only the people that don’t might people knowing who they are would show up though. Hummmmm…. :-? :-??

  19. nighthawk Says:

    Kat,
I think that it would be great to have a RowanReview picnic for everyone who lives in the area on a bring a little extra basis. This would be a good thing to do. Maybe even invite some speakers to attend… Say maybe a Forest Ranger, Game Warden, Conservation Officer, and perhaps maybe even the Mayor to tell the story of Rodburn Park and give a few tips on what we the people can do to lend a hand.
Personally I don’t mind that the public officers and officials know who I am, otherwise I wouldn’t have allowed myself to be videotaped taking pictures. The only reason that I’d rather remain anonymous in my writings is because of certian job related policy. The folks who I work for would prefer that I didn’t take public stands which could arouse public contriversy. Therefore I simply post under this simple nickname, in my capacity as one of the free natural people upon the earth.
I don’t think that combining a public picnic sponsered or hosted by RowanReview with a protest would be a good thing to do though. Even though I might be open to the idea of a peaceful protest being held on another (entirely seperate) occasion (and) IF it is the last resort to getting things accomplished. :)
As far as going out and picking up litter, I really don’t believe that anyone is going to say anything about us cleaning up our public places… I wish they would publish a map of public land boundries somewhere on the internet so we can take every measure to avoid trespassing upon private property.
Sometimes it is difficult (if not impossible) to tell that you have unknowingly entered upon private property.
The “word” is to avoid any FEE AREA that requires a permit (like out at the lake) and let the Forest Service take care of it until they decide to issue Free Parking Passes to people donating their time and money to help clean it up.

  20. kat Says:

Ok, y’all. When should WE’all have a picnic at Rodburn? I think NightHawk has a great idea of inviting someone to speak on the history of the park, etc.

  21. BRAINSTRAINER Says:

Do you all think the mayor would
come out to the public park (our park)
to speak (talk) to the people ?
And do they viedo tape you while you use the bathrooms ? nighthawk or psuedonomen
have you talked to them about our local parks and about what we can do ?
These parks could be great for our younger people or for someone who wants to take there family or friends out for a picnic or hiking ect…
So nighthawk let me know how can i help you and psuedonomen ?

  22. nighthawk Says:

I think that all of the people mentioned above would gladly attend and speak at the picnic if invited a reasonable amount of time in advance.

If it were me I’d look for a projected time frame of next spring or summer. The leafs are falling and Wildfire Season is just around the corner. This kind of event could take some time to coordinate, and to publicize. Remember that when the speakers attend the picnic they will be on the job, so they need plenty of advance notice for scheduling.

Those cameras were put there after somebody tried to set the latrine buildings on fire, and videotape the outside only. The cameras are in use in an effort to prevent arson and vandalism in an effort to help prosecute people who try to distroy our parks.

Woodsy says “Give a hoot, Don’t Polute”.
Smokey Says “Only YOU can prevent forest fires.”
If we could get enough famailes to attend, then maybe Smokey or Woodsy could attend also.

Here are three simple ways you can help:

If you pack it in, pack it out.

Pick up some litter left behind by others.

Pitch In, lend a hand, help us protect our public lands.

  23. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

    pseudo-nomen
I for one miss the lookout/makeout spot up on that hill, there used to be a wellpump up there and the water was great!
Probably just needed some cleanout type maintainence, I doubt that it was contaminated worse than Licking river water anyway no prozac, premerin/berth control, fluoride,clorimides/clorine; just maybe some tritium &pcb-s & cryposporidium to filter out or boil for camp coffee? There was a neat trail back to town from there also but its wildcat arout the briars now.

  24. nighthawk Says:

I was looking into the possibilities of helping to get that place cleaned up and maybe, just maybe, if at all permissible or permitable, volunteer some time and materials towards minor repairs.
And then LIFE kicked into overtime, taking away most all of my free time and what few extra resources that I had to work with.

  25. nighthawk Says:

All of these comments, pictures, etc… and still not enough for a story. Man! I’m slacking here. Just bumping it back up here so I can remember what else I need to be working on in my free time.

  26. nighthawk Says:

Back to Rodburn Park for a bit.
Here is a picture of the old Rodburn Loop Trail Map.

    Rodburn Hollow Recreation Area.

A big THANK YOU to Billy Sexton for permission to use this picture over here.

Clicking on the map will enlarge it.

  27. nighthawk Says:

Does anyone know about proposed plans to run an I-64 connector down through Rodburn Hollow?

A few of us are hearing a rumor that rodburn hollow is at the top of the list for the new I-64 connector road.

This rumor has it that I-64 will have a new set of ramps installed in the Big Perry or Cranston area and a straight shot to Morehead down through Rodburn Hollow.

If this is the case, another part of the Sheltowee Trace Trail will be relocated, obstructed or closed.

  28. nighthawk Says:

Anyone heard anything on the Freight Station, or have they sit it on the back burner for everyone to forget… Then Surprise!?

  29. praenomen(required) Says:

Big Perry does not line up with Rodburn: “plans to run an I-64 connector down through Rodburn Hollow?” The plans are for a 3lane from uS60E @
school house branch (accross from BP& Morehead Estates)
up that hollow and down to I64 where the current “rest area” is, replacing that with viable real estate at the exit that will also connect over to 377 near Clear Fork; I have seen “cars only” exits years ago in major metros that could be made in just a few days work, out at 799/I64 but this would not provide a bypass of downtown for 32traffic. Years ago I was out there and a nice road goes almost all the way to the back of the restarea from the ridge. The cut thru for this proposed road will slice the ridge down near as much as devide hill and thus the existing trail and forrest service road.

  30. nighthawk Says:

This car only thing is what I’m hearing rumored. No Morehead bypass for Ky-32, but I’m hearing that it might affect the park.

Don’t really know anything for certain on this, just what I’ve heard others talking about.

On the bright side, it’s only a rumor. :)

  31. nighthawk Says:

How ’bout a few words about Rodburn Park, anybody?…
It would seem as if THEY just want us to forget about it for reasons unknown by me.

A weak link in the FENCE maybe???

I don’t know, but what I do know is that EVERY SINGLE TIME I BRING IT UP, “THEY” start pestering me again!

    So bring it on…
    Let’s stir up a hornet’s nest!

Let the truth about Rodburn Park surface.

  32. nighthawk Says:

I mean after all, it’s not like I’ve claimed to have seen anything there :D or something.
Especially not so close to a residential area…

  33. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

Ok “ANYbody” (besides me?) I don’t quite get yur drift, by “They” spooks or aliens? er something besides the local redfezzers?
I like Rodburn Park but is it being used enough to avoid it being phased out? I like the less used park because it is not crowded. The MSU Xcoungtry runners used to use the trail around to Eagle Lake or Wilson AVE or Frailey Drive or Divide Hill but I have not seen all of the trail in years so don’t know all of those status wise open or not?

  34. nighthawk Says:

THEY know who “THEY” are and THEY know exactly what I haven’t claimed to see :).
Sorry about all the vagueness, but THEY are the ones who should come clean about this whole situation — or at-least come up with a good lie so we can catch them up in it.
    Will the circle go unbroken?
Yep, I just threw it on the ground and stomped it.
    No More Games.
But if THEY want to continue, I hold a good hand from that stacked deck.

  35. nighthawk Says:

Besides, it’s more important to be talking about Rodburn Park right now.

  36. nighthawk Says:

And just not on here… We need to be reminding our friends and neighbors that there is a Rodburn Park that is somehow OWNED??? by the city of Morehead.

  37. nighthawk Says:

How the City ended up with National Forest Land is beyond me, but it has been confirmed that the city owns Rodburn Park, not just manages it… Trouble is, nobody that I’ve talked to knows how that come about.

  38. nighthawk Says:

    A question that comes to mind;
How did the state (land managers), allow the city to take ownership of Rodburn Park (N.F. land)?

  39. nighthawk Says:

Go up and look at the first few pictures of Rodburn Park again…

You said it Kat, and I think they mean it…
All of those signs basically say “Get out and stay out!”, and if you had seen what I haven’t claimed to see, it might explain a lot of things.

  40. Kat Says:

Ok nighthawk, now I’m totally confused. I’m tempted to go up to Rodburn Park and look around but now the way you’re talkin’, I’m ’bout ‘fraid to alone. Is there hidden camera’s somewhere? Tell me where and I’ll ‘moon ‘em’! That should be enough to blow a fuse or space station out of the sky! :)

  41. nighthawk Says:

    Your confused?
    I’m Confused!!!
City owns it according to State & Fed, but this map of DBNF shows it as if it were still property of the National Forest.
    http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/documents/lac/mapdb.pdf

  42. Kat Says:

City? ownes Federal Land? Something isn’t Kosher, is it?

  43. nighthawk Says:

Well for one, I kept trying to post that last comment that I made this morning, but it kept disappearing into cyberspace, so I had to go about posting the link to that map another way…

I tried posting it 5 times to be exact, and nothing—not even in moderation cue.

So I had to make a generic post and edit the words and link I wanted into it.

Just keep in mind that I haven’t said that I’ve seen anything there, and haven’t made any claims to have seen anything yet…

I just find it absurd that “THEY” keep annoying me every time I make a post about RODBURN HOLLOW RECREATION AREA.

So I’m going to keep on talking about RODBURN HOLLOW RECREATION AREA every chance that I get.

I just have to wonder why they start in on me when I bring up Rodburn. Is it a weak link in the FENCE or something?

  44. PRECIOUS Says:

I don’t know what is going on up there
at Rodburn Park but I was up there around Noon today and saw gates across the roads saying Rodburn Park is closed .
Good Luck getting in there Kat they have it locked down tight for some reason or other .

  45. PRECIOUS Says:

If I wasn’t seeing things than I thought I’d seen some big heavy equipment there ; not to mention the grass was grown up around the picnic tables .
But I couldn’t get in to get a good look .
I don’t know what is going on there at Roburn Park But it sounds like nighthawk knows something but han’t telling us

  46. PRECIOUS Says:

Hey nighthawk why do you keep spelling the words they and fence in all capital letters ?
Is the word THEY some kind of secret group like a clique or something ?
Does FENCE mean stolen property or something ?
Did they steal the park ?
The tax payers in my family want to know .

  47. nighthawk Says:

So you say that RODBURN HOLLOW RECREATION AREA has been FENCED eh?

I know, I know… You said it was gated (off limits?) at noon yesterday. :)

I have heard of such a group as a clique, and I know that the word fence can mean dealing in stolen goods, but I haven’t explicitly stated such a thing as a clique has fenced the park, however according to your report it is at-least gated and closed.

To answer your question about my capitalization of spellings in certain words could deny those whom I refer to as THEY the opportunity to come clean about the Rodburn Park issues.

  48. nighthawk Says:

So tell me… What kind of “big heavy equipment” did you see over at Rodburn Hollow Recreation Area yesterday at noon?

Or, more simply, what color was it?

Not to insinuate that I suspect it might be yellow with orange and black placards or anything.
Because if I were to have claimed to have seen something there, it would be something else.

  49. Kat Says:

RE:Rodburn Hollow—I was talking to my dad’s wife yesterday and she reminded me that her son, I guess technically my step-brother? worked on the road crew for the city. She said that last year he went along with some others and fixed the toliets, etc., at Rodburn but that someone came through and destroyed everything so they closed it. That’s all I know.

  50. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

THE FED cannot “OWN” the “Daniel Boone National Forrest” unless someone produces the sate legislative permission for them to own it. They use terms like “management”, and payments in lue of property taxes or “permanent fund”. The USDA and USFS trade land alot so if they choose to trade some land with the City for Rodburn Park it is fairly routine. Call them to see what happened. Those old enuff remember that the USFS had the Depot down from the Park as well as the ranger house &garage on 519, that was used by the Rescue Squad last year or two, likely is county “owned” now; just as an example. A “Take Back Kentucky” meeting I went to 9yrs ago had Perry Clark conservative Demo from west Louisville, who said he could not find anyone who would produce state permission for fed forrest ownership?

  51. nighthawk Says:

“Call them to see what happened.”?
Knock yourself out. I’ve been led round and round in circles.

Maybe you will have better luck getting past an ~”I don’t know” then I have had.

    Better yet!
Let’s just not do or say anything and let them turn it into a new apartment complex or roadway something useful.
It’s just rotting away with boys playing army in the woods instead of clearing the trails and repairing the picnic tables, camp pads and bridges.

The old timers don’t deserve anything to do in Morehead anyway.
That loop trail used to be wheelchair accessable, but the people who paid a lifetime of taxes don’t deserve anything.

  52. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

To those who remember 9-10yrs ago (after the big windstorm) there were court cases fighting over the downed trees as Indianabat habitat and the fed Judge Forrester (no kidding) ruled that basically humans and nature should remain seperate based on his view of evolution, (read his opinion) ALSO, there was concern AFTER some legislators found their property around “Land Between the Lakes” had imposed on it restricted use designations after it was declared a UNBIOSPHERE so there was a “resolution” passed condeming it in state legislature; Rep Perry Clark, I think was one of the sponsors that said he went around Frankfort researching for the constituionally required legislative permision for the “general government” (fed) to aquire/own such lands.
Anybody wanna homestead some un”own”ed land ? LOL?

this article has a map showing how fractionated the “green” forrest maps should be…

  53. nighthawk Says:

I suppose I get your point. I don’t even own my own land… I rent it from the state each year.

I was being blocked too yesterday morning. So yes, the replies do go out into cyberspace sometimes.

If it’s something really super important that you have to get on here, just give me an email and I’ll try to help out.

I’m going to go down through this thread and try to fix a few links.

  57. nighthawk Says:

Rodburn is now inside of the city limits, so I suppose it would be the city’s liability if a cougar or panther attacked someone at Rodburn Park.
I’ve been all over these forests (locally) both night and day. Sometimes with only a mini lite, invisible to others unless it’s pointed straight at them, and the only thing I’ve ran across is a few bear so far… and luckily they have all ran away from me.
But it’s best to be prepared for the worst.
    I carry my walking stick,
    A large sized pepper spray,
and sometimes a little extra just in case.
A large cat animal will stalk you and you generally don’t stand much of a chance unless you go for the eyes, but it’s usually too late, because they will pounce upon you before you realize they are there , or just as you make eye contact with them.
With bear attack deaths, It’s usually sudden death, and you’ll never know what hit you most of the time. The bear doesn’t stalk, it just kinda reaches out and gets you.
Now if a bear comes running at you, you might stand a good chance for survival. Just get them started on a slope where they will go head over heels.

  58. nighthawk Says:

Don’t get me wrong… I’m not saying that there isn’t any cougars or panthers here, just that I’ve been lucky enough that I haven’t encountered one yet

  59. nighthawk Says:

Some folk were conducting a study on a certain type of bat up behind the old Morgan Fork Guard Station a few years back from what I understand. Now it’s being dozed for utility? work or something related to the new highway.

  60. nighthawk Says:

Used to be a lot easier traveling before the Ice storms and the Tornado before that.
Now it’s up and over or down and under, usually both for me… unless I can manage to find a row of downed trees and just make my own path atop of them.
Sometimes finding myself ~40 feet above ground and having to wrap my arms (and legs) around a small poplar and slide down to the next row of trees at the dead end.
Sorta makes it hard to get anyone to go along on the next 10 hour hike, 4 hours sleep, and 10 hour hike back.

  61. nighthawk Says:

Like I said, I’ve not ran into one yet, but people report the large cats being in Morehead…
    http://forums.perspectives.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=5953&forum_id=54

  62. Kat Says:

That’s not true nighthawk! You most certainly did run into a LARGE CAT/KAT many times over the past couple of years! LOL If ya don’t remember, I’ll be right over! Seriously, when I was a kid and was raised up on Dry Creek in the area that is now called Cardinal Lane, a bobcat came down from the hills behind us and hung out for quite awhile. I remember mom and dad always checking outside first and then tell me to run as fast as I could to the car. I used to play in the cellar all the time and they wouldn’t let me play there because of the bobcat.—speaking of pepper spray nighthawk, I’m sure you know there is pepper spray for people and a different pepper spray made especially for animals. I used to carry it when I was doing housecalls and I still keep both of them with me all the time.

I uploaded that fractionated map for those who won’t click the link to see.
Will have to remove it and make room for other things before long, but it should be OK for a while.

  65. nighthawk Says:

I didn’t realize the picture was that big…
Might have to take it (and these last two posts) down in the next few days instead of the next couple of weeks.

    Edit:
I resized that fractionated map above to take up less space on the server, so maybe it can stay up for a while longer now.

  67. TechKnomen Says:

Rodburn park has always been “in the city limits”. the line ran up the east side of the street untill the park and then up Martin Tolliver branch trail/creek then up that ridge to the main ridge then over to the Fraley drive area to I-64 exit. Some maps have the dotted line.

  68. TechKnomen Says:

oops the point above the powerline and the Tractor Sales is the corner to the

I don’t think there’s any post limits, but I do believe that fiber splice is attempting to filter some content out.
I have no idea what you were trying to post yesterday, but day before, I had to make a generic post and then edit the …fed.us/ link into it.

I didn’t see any of your comments in moderation cue, just as I didn’t see any of mine there day before…
So they are getting lost in cyberspace somewhere along the way.

  74. TechKnomen Says:

    On connection for carnivore protections:

This agenda is not that of “animal lovers” as we think of them — protecting and caring for our pets and livestock and things like bird and squirrel feeding — but rather the coercive FORCE that unchecked populations of large predators has on the world.
    http://www.propertyrightsresearch.org/2005/articles02/rewilding_institute.htm
the agenda, is to wrest control of all resources — all land, water and yes, the freedom of people — without firing a shot. If you are not taking this seriously, just stop and consider how successful the Endangered Species Act alone has been in stealing people’s livelihoods, property, ability to exercise generational land stewardship, etc.

  76. nighthawk Says:

I was a bit confused about Rodburn Park being taken into the city limits within the last 12 years or so. Mostly spurred from the city police not responding to Mountain View Apartments back in the 1990’s…

So yes, My Mistake, but they did ( as I understand) extend the city limits eastward, but Rodburn Park was already in the city limits beforehand.

  77. tabby Says:

i would like to know where overlook park is in clearfield.. anyone with any directions would be greatly appreciated thank you

  78. TechKnomen Says:

I suppose I can tell but it can be dangerous!, dont lean on fense and becareful of 60-80ft drops or steep slopes, the views can be as good as Amburgy rocks, you can also go there.
Go to 1167(Dry Creek Road almost 1mile up)
Tower Hill Road, turns gravel 1.5miles at top of ridge past cliffs, turn left(or park at the wide spot) walk down the abandoned wide trail on the South west side of the
loop around the old forest tower (Triangle Tower BTY)
This takes you about 5min. if the trail is clear; keep a straight line and you should see the railing but watch out. The old pump base is on the right just as the slope levels out, this is the old pinic area.
Lots of family outings & meals there. Another couple of places to scout out is “Broke Leg” falls near the Menifee Morgan line off 460. and Yocum falls on the ridge above Paragon. In Morgan County. Both old Parks that once saw better days.

  79. TechKnomen Says:

Notice the dark lines and close spacing on topo lines this is a steep cliff area:
Link to a topo map of the Triangle Mtn Pinic area
You can print it I think for a fee..,

You really have to know the area, folks like to take down the road signs and get people lost LOL?

  81. Tabby Says:

ok well i have been on tower hill many times in my short little life i used to live in the house on the bottom of the hill but never knew that this place was up there thank you very much… now you have my imagination going so can you tell me how to get to this broke leg falls and yocum falls.. never heard of them either and it is a shame that the state or county will not pitch in and take care of or clean up these beautiful places i think someone should do something here… it is a shame and thank you for your help :D

  82. nighthawk Says:

I had a hard time finding it after the loop and building was rebuilt with a new radio tower installed up through triangle lookout.
Best to stay off from the loop around triangle (it’s been leased to a broadcaster), but park beside of the gate somewhere off the road.
Looking at the gate blocking the loop around the tower, walk from the center of the road towards the left gate post and look over the bank. You should see where some old trees have been bulldozed under the new loop road blocking the old road down to the park.
A path should take you down to the road just beyond the gate and still to your left…
The road will turn into a path and will become more and more impassable until you finally make your way to either a chain link fence, or to a wooden railed fence with rock posts after working tour way across downed trees and young pines and brayer patches…
The wood railed fence is where you want to go to. Just don’t lean on the fences as tech has already pointed out.

    Now for the warnings;
There are some pretty steep drop offs that aren’t fenced off.
A few rather large dead trees are standing about ready to fall.
You might encounter some underground telephone cable that isn’t exactly underground anymore, don’t trip, the cliff / slope to the right hand side of this cable isn’t fenced and the fall could end up being fatal.
Take a friend and both of you should have cell phones.
Don’t climb on the wooden rails. They seem to be pretty solid still yet, but I wouldn’t bet my life on them holding me.
The pines have taken over, so you will have a rough time making it around the point.
Don’t block the gate when you park, people’s automobiles have been towed and impounded for blocking the gates.
Please don’t litter out there, or deface the remains of the park. This alone will save you $500 in fines plus court costs, and will make it easier on me and the others who pick up the trash ( except for those little bearing markers that people have had there since the 1980’s. )
    Enjoy! but be careful.

  83. nighthawk Says:

Tech will have to help with the other two places that you are asking about.
I generally try to stay inside my own county.
If Tech were to put some directions up, then I might (maybe I’ve already been there?) go and scout them out for MorganMinute.com

  84. TechKnomen Says:

Pretty simple for Broke Leg it is just about at the county line on US 460 between Morgan and Mennifee County.
    http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=37.91137&lon=-83.48573&datum=nad83&u=6&layer=DRG25&size=m&s=50

Yocum Falls is a bit harder dang close to 10miles from Morehead near the center of this map link betwee the word BLAZE and the number 308 and again a steep cliff area. but you can drive right up to it.
NOT to be confused with “Yocum” just off 519 past the fire department and gas station.
    http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.02613&lon=-83.34783&s=100&size=m&symshow=n&u=6&datum=nad83&layer=DRG100

  85. TechKnomen Says:

I am looking for a place called “the bowl” by the locals from Mennifee over near NADA tunnel area er sommwhairs, said to be a rare virgin forrest as the high cliff walls negated the logging booms over the last 100years.

It was described to me as a one way in box canyon with no visable outlet
Kinda a land that time forgot with massive big trees. I was told about it by a former dope/acid user hippie wannabe so maybe they was trippin? Or the coven tricked them by disorintation cause it sounded like one of the “Groves” those deep occultists like?

  86. nighthawk Says:

I was at Yocum Falls on accident around 16 years ago. Nice place up there.
I’ll try and get a friend to drive out there with me and grab a few pictures.

I’m not real sure about cell phone coverage in that area, but he has a CB that will flat walk the dog and the 102 inch stainless steel whip to go with it.

  87. (required voluntary compliance) Says:

    “nighthawk” er “NightHawK” et cetera
I hope attitude and practices have changed since I was there about 15years ago, as there was all sorts of junk and trash dumped at Yocum Falls as you can drive right up to the cliff almost. So the average redneck could go dump junk right over the cliff, sad but true. Also, those falls were constant in the past as the forrest, now pasture, held alot more water from runoff, so you have to go within a day or two of rain to see a water fall at all, otherwise it is a cool retreat in the summer if you dare walk down into the shady cliff over hang/casym/box/canyon
Either way be careful, as over the years back , no doubt unthinking dumb-buts have tossed glassbottles out there too for pleanty of glass shards to cut your shoes feet and tires on yur mountain bike.

  88. nighthawk Says:

Those little green bottles about 4 inches tall (from the late 70s?) is what I keep finding no matter how many times I walk an area, so I can only imagine how the falls are… Worse then beneath the intersection of Nickells Branch & Clack Mtn East? or how the dump site on the 519 side of Clack Mountain East was?
Speaking of 519 side of Clack Mountain, I remember the trucks driving by around every half hour until they give it up (I used to do a lot of climbing) while I was parked in the wide spot near the rocks (now private?) back close to 20 years ago.
It really disturbs me when I set out to take some good pictures of a nice park and then come back with all of these bad pictures, and then instead of the good story I was going to write, I have to write of things ran down, piled up with trash, or overgrown and/or unmaintained/under-maintained.

  89. enforced voluntary compliance Says:

I used to do maintainence on trails that I rode on mountain bike or ran/hiked and It is alot of work to stop and drain puddles and move 1-or2-man size fallen trees and branches before the windstorm reclaimed alot of deer paths and old trails SO with all this non-interventionism attitude of the environut extremists and the budget cutbacks (OR cutbacks on increases) it is no surprise that lots of old roadside parks and picnic areas are long forgotton as the I-64 crowd whizzes at 80mph+ to get from one population center to another; few countree stores and fewer country schools that are fought for fiercely to keep such community anchors in place rather than put all the eggs in one school compound many ride the buses for 1hour + to get to for each county where there used to be a dozen one&2room schools and 2or3 high skoo’s; the “Bath school disaster” keep comming to mind.

  90. nighthawk Says:

  93. nighthawk Says:

Oh, I am sure that they’d pay attention, but working towards the benefit of the people (and animals for that matter) would surely put us into the creditor category.
I mean if we’re out there doing those things that the people who’s paid to do them, yet underfunded, at no charge to the public, then that ought to be a creditable thing that we’re doing, right?
Surely they, at least locally will give credit where credit is due, and not “charge” us as debtors.
I mean, don’t get me wrong… I plan to coordinate such efforts with the land managers as I have in the past.
They need to drive out and mark the work boundaries for me anyway so I don’t encounter any liability for stepping over on private property accidentally.

…What is the future of the 700,000 acres of Kentucky that are in the Daniel Boone National Forest?

A meeting to kick off long-range planning for the forest is scheduled for Tuesday in Lexington.

The Forest Service, along with the Southern Group of State Foresters, started the two-year effort last month with the first of 15 meetings around the region. The Lexington meeting will be the eighth.

Thirteen Southern states and parts of the Caribbean are included in the project.

Greis said much of the discussion has centered on the effects of disease and insects on the forests, and how they will fare as the South becomes more urbanized. People representing forest industries, environmental groups and local, state and federal governments have attended.

The Lexington meeting will be at Four Points Sheraton, Stanton Way. It will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 5 p.

I uploaded a picture of Rodburn Hollow Campsite. It’s a nice place for Day Camping, but closed after 9:00 p.m. I have more pictures that I can upload too. The Park has a nice Picnic Pavilion that can be reserved but contact the City Of Morehead because they are the ones in charge of the park now. Oh yeah, The address is listed wrong… It’s located on Rodburn Road opposite 32 side of the 4 way intersection of KY 32 and US 60.

You know something… I don’t ask for much out of life, but I would like to pitch a tent with my children there and let them camp out while they are still young. Should the unforseen emergency occur, Rodburn Park isn’t too far away for an ambulance to make a timely response.

  106. enforced voluntary compliance Says:

You can camp in the National Forest just not on city property & that includes the city parks that close due to insurance reasons. Contact the USDA cumberland office & or consult the PVA and various maps, I would not bet against you camping accross the street on Boone land that is within the city limits but not “owned by the city, or up the hollow outside the park boundry but not on private land. They will not encourage that or help you figger out where.
I did know a set of brothers that camped near campus within the city limits and avoided paying for a dorm room several semesters bout 15years ago. On really cold nights they stayed with friends from what I gather. It was over a 15min. hike to their camp but hey with a solar charger they could have phone and internet now LOL!

  107. nighthawk Says:

Yes you can do primitive camping practically anywhere on National Forest lands, conditionally…
What is it, 300 foot away form any road, trail, stream, or watershed, and
at least 100 foot from any cliff base or rock shelter.
It is suggested that you practice “Leave No Trace” ethics.

Why build a new building and make it look old by design? Beautification? or Collagecationalism?
East First Street the future site for University Boulevard West perhaps?

  109. Kat Says:

What really irks me about all the building in Morehead being torn down for the snakepit center is in the beginning, it was heard over and over, even on here in past posts, that WE HAVE PLENTY OF PARKING. NEVER HAD TROUBLE FINDING A PARKING PLACE FOR ANY EVENTS. Really? Then why has historic buildings all become pavement! That’s all I ever saw living in Chicago was a concrete jungle. Now, we have it here to. Big Box stores and parking lots. QUITE CHARMING ISN’T IT?

  110. Clearfield Cat Says:

ITA Cat! Parking for the CC has never been an issue. The city wants to “re-vitalize” and “beautify” downtown is sure going about it the wrong way! I wonder which block of historic buildings will be next? I know Morehead has alotof empty buildings downtown but if they hadn’t invited Roses, Heck’s and Walmart in maybe Morehead wouldn’t look like a war zone of sorts.

but we could sure use it at the Court House eh?
And to think that they have a rather large “County Employee Parking Only” lot right beside the jail.
Why doesn’t more “County Employees” use the “County Employees Parking Only” lot, instead of
filling up the public parking spaces?

I mean after all, We elected those people who decided to post that sign that reads “County Employees Parking Only” along with a big threatening message that says something along the lines of All Others Will Be Towed…
Why didn’t they just post a sign that says “AUXILIARY COURTHOUSE PARKING”?

Wonder if it’s the status kick or a power trip that makes them desire to fill up the Civilian Parking Places?

I could post pictures of the County Employee lot practically empty and the Civilian Lot filled with Sheriff’s Vehicles and Vehicles belonging to County Employees, but I’d rather the people drive by and have a look for themselves.
Besides, I’d have to start a new article to get those pictures posted.

I might be able to shop at the Family Dollar or The Big Store during Court Days if their parking lot wasn’t full of automobiles belonging to people who have been summonsed into court.

    Happy Now?

But in all honesty, and setting all satire/sarcasm aside…
He is right, the comments could be expanded to a number higher then 10 on the front page.
20 or so looks like it might work under this new theme, especially if the number of article category previews were to be increased.

Perhaps some stuff could be moved from the right column over
to the left so the Recent Comments could be made longer to
show stuff going back more than 2 days as I dont get to
visit the site everyday (I bet a bunch of regulars dont)
on average an will be missing out on stuff that is not in the
    recent comments column?

Yes, Dave. sadly the picture of Monica Lewinski’s boyfriends wife did show up, and I just ate! Well. off to the litter box!

How do I add a picture or some sort of image to the left of my name in a post. For example, nighthawk has a ‘hawk”/bird pic beside theirs.

just go to http://www.gravatar.com/ and sign up with the email address that you use on the board (has to be real) and then you can upload a picture that you want to use for your avatar. The gravatar site will help you transform almost any picture into an avatar.

Might as well see if I can post the picture now:
